| Never buy a pup as a present for a girlfriend! Period! |

YT Addict | And why exactly is that? My hazel was given to me by my boyfriend, and we weren't even a year yet. Were still together, but that really has nothing to do with it. Puppies are great gifts, no matter who Is giving them! |

Good luck, the dog will need it! I am sure you will get some PM's for a few BYB's looking for a buck. Glad you are still together.

YT Addict | Well clearly i know we don't feel that way. Lol. If your giving a puppy to someone you are certain will love it, and take care of it, I don't see what the problem Is! |

First a person buying a dog should study what kind of health problems there may be inheritable in the breed. A good breeder will be able to discuss this without problems. A breeder who dosn't know, likely won't help the buyer out when the pup is found to have inherited a problem the breeder didn't bother to test for or even know about. Go ahead and tell your friend to check out the AKC website, it is helpful and it may take a while to find what you are looking for. A healthy dog with a helpful breeder is well worth the effort !! Good luck for the friend and girlfriend!!

| My husband gave me my first Yorkie Tessie, 2 years ago, as a surprise Mothers Day gift but he took me with him to pick her out, best gift he ever gave me besides our son that was a gift from God.

| I do see where a "Suprise Puppy" could turn out to not be a great idea. But, for the most part, a puppy as a gift can turn out into a beautiful lifetime experience. I am sure your friend knows that his girlfriend actually wants the puppy or he wouldn't be thinking about getting her one.... Good Luck! I am searching too |

| My two cents Giving puppies as gifts makes me a little nervous. For instance, my brother was given a puppy as a gift from a relative after hearing him mention that it might be nice to have a little furball around. Well he said, but he really wasn't ready to make that commitment and definitely didn't expect to get one as a gift. It happened at a very busy time in his life and right after we lost our father. Although he loves his dog dearly, he felt that it was at the wrong time and he didn't train him sufficiently. He does have some behavior issues with him now and I have been trying to convince him to go to some obedience training. Maybe rather than just running out and finding a puppy for her, he could present her with the idea that he wants to get her a puppy and involve her in the decision. It would be just as fun and still a great surprise. This way, if she really isn't ready, she's going to come right out and tell him. One of my current puppy buyers is actually a BF / GF couple and the puppy is to be a present for the woman. She made a comment when they were over that she was so happy that he let her take part in the decision and that he didn't just go out find one on his own. I'm not saying a puppy surprise is a bad idea but things can go both ways easily in a situation like that.
