| Wanted Yorkie in VA/MD/DC area Hi everyone! I'm new to Yorkies (and dogs in general). I have a past with horses and cats so I am familiar with the care of animals and yes, the vets bills and expenses that come with animals. I have a 1000 pound pasture ornament that costs us several hundred a month to keep, but I wouldn't have it any other way. The old man deserves his semi-retirement and will live out his days in leisure. My pets are forever pets, so I want to do the research correct to make sure I get a good dog for my family. My 23 year old horse, which I purchased when he was 1, is now my 4 year old daughter's first horse and he is absolutely perfect for her. That's what I hope to find in a yorkie for my family, the perfect dog that we can all love and enjoy. I'm starting my search for a Yorkie in the area and I found one breeder that is not too far from me but currently they do not have any yorkies available. Any advice on where to look or does anyone know of anyone in the area that has available yorkies? I'm hoping to find something a little older and already potty trained. Disclaimer: I have young children, 2 and 4. They have both been exposed to smallish dogs from day one. They are still supervised when they are around animals because they are little kids and they do the weird things that little kids do and until they stop doing the weird things that little kids do they will not interact with the dog without supervision. I want everyone to be safe and the only way to ensure the dog and kids are safe is to supervise. I've signed up for a rescue/adoption email listing, but understandably most rescues do not want to adopt small dogs to a family with little kids. So I've come to the conclusion that I will have to purchase a yorkie, which I don't have a problem with, it's not like the yorkies are free from the rescue groups. I am hoping to find something by beginning of June as I have promised my daughter we will have a puppy by her birthday. And if you are wondering why a Yorkie - I'm allergic to lots of stuff so I need something that does not shed. And truth be told, I know someone who has some Yorkies (does not breed, just pets) and I love them and so do my kids and most importantly, my husband! Any help/advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks! |

| Hi! Welcome!!!! I would look for a bigger Yorkie. My Jackson is 16lbs of fun and is very durable. He loves to go swimming, he loves to hike, he loves to run, go to the dog parks, play with my young siblings (age 3 and 7), walk around the farm (we live around a lot of farms) etc. Little ones can enjoy all this stuff too but I do think a larger Yorkie is a better option for young kids. While my 3 year old half sister is very good with him, there have been times where she accidentally got too rough, etc, and it would worry me aLOT more if he was any smaller. I also like that kids aren't inclined to pick him up because he's not tiny. With tiny ones, I've seen lots of kids feel they can just pick them up whenever they want and that can be a dangerous combination. By the way, I am in Annapolis, MD area too Love seeing others in the area. I go to a nice park in Annapolis a lot and there's lots to do with dogs in this area it seems. I've been thinking my next dog is going to be a Silky Terrier... VERY similar to Yorkies (basically genetically the same) but they tend to be more 'terrier' and sturdier and bigger. I've been told people think Jackson is a Silky (I did not get him from a good breeder so unfortunately can't recommend them to you). I've spoken to this breeder before in VA- Home I think this one is in PA Snowglen Home Here's another in NY- Dobralco Silky Terriers of New York Small Non-Shedding Puppies There's also a few great breeders here on YT but don't be fooled if you get any PM's from some that are hounding you to get their dog, we sometimes have those types on here, so just because they are a YT member doesn't necessarily mean they are a 'good' breeder. Breny (YT user) is awesome from what I've heard!!! I'd love to have one of her pups one day. Anyways good luck
