Please think long and hard before you acquire a Yorkie. Are you willing and able to take it to the vet and pay the vet bills. It is $500 to get my Yorkie's teeth cleaned. Average vet biils for a small dog is $1000-to-$1500 a year and this is with no major health problems. If so... www.YORKIERESCUEME.com is a great place to get a wonderful Yorkie. My husband and I adopted a 4.7 year old Yorkie with papers from the Irish Kennel Club. She was given up because she has food and pollen allergies that were treated by giving her too much steriods, so she also became diabetic. She is a delightful dog that goes with me everywhere. She walks everywhere. She rides in a bicycle basket. She rides in the car in a large cage or in a dog bed. She even goes on the DC Metro with me. When you adopt a non-puppy they are already potty trained and leash trained. If you are looking for an inexpensive dog, please do NOT get a Yorkie. Even www.YORKIERESCUEME.com charges adoption fees. The theory is that if you are unwilling to pay a fee and suport all the dogs they rescue then you may not be willing to spend the money to give the dog the proper medical care. You may think you are justing getting a dog--no big deal. In reality a Yorkie is going to bond with one of you and want to be your Best Friend for the rest of its life.

I know Yorkies are the most adorable dogs. I can't imagine ever having another dog that wasn't a Yorkie. I got a of books on Yorkie's and dogs from my local library before we adopted this one. It really helps. My vet calls Yorkies "Little Generals"--they can be bossy little dogs. They know what they want and they can be impatient. The smaller ones are adorable, but they can be less sturdy. Some can have difficult teeth and a delicate treachea. They can also have a little snort that sometimes sounds like a goose--but that is normal. Please look into rescueing a dog. They are wonderful dogs. Not all are old or have been sick. Most of the dogs people got them not realizing that they are too delicate for kids under 8, that they need to eat 2-3 times a day, or that the vet bills were too much for them. With the economy in the state it is in a lot of people have given up their gorgous adorable pets. The rescue league I used works out of PA and NJ. They have lots of dogs--all ages. Here is a link to their dogs available for adoption: Our Dogs They also tell you about the dog's personality and behavior.

The info below is from the DC Metro's web site. I take my dog in her bike basket since it has a strap that hooks through her harness and she can't get out of the basket unless I release her. I also print out the page from the web site and take it with me...just in case Metro employees are not aware of this policy. Metro - About Metro - Q & A About Metro "Can I bring my dog on Metrorail and Metrobus? The only animals that are permitted on Metrorail are service animals that assist people with disabilities. Pets are not permitted to ride Metrobus or Metrorail. However, a pet can be transported on Metrorail and Metrobus in a secure container as long as there is no possibility that the pet can get free."
