To the OP, no one is shunning you or blaming you. However the situation is what it is...regardless to if your lab meant it or not, it's actions were the result of the death of poor Coco. Even if it was an accident, you have to look at the severity of the result. If it happened once, it could happen again. No one is saying you aren't worthy of a Yorkie or a dummy or a bad person, but your larger dog clearly presents a danger for smaller breeds. You may want one more than anything, but if it is not safe it's not safe, nothing you can do about it. Please don't be down or blaming yourself. That is a horrible thing to have happened and I am very sorry you had to witness it and deal with that heartache.:( |
Hmmmm, well, I don't want to be too repetitive. But, I wonder if your breeder prepared you enough in bringing the puppy home (w/ a lab there)? Not that it's a breeder's total responsibility, but a good breeder wants to know about other pets, kids, etc. in your home. When I brought home Marcel at 1 pound 4 oz. (16 weeks old), my breeder advised TONS of caution w/ my Wylie - and he is just 7.5 lbs.; I think she would have freaked had I had a large dog. It is heartbreaking, but, maybe it's just not the right time for you to have a little dog. Maybe it's just not right for your lab, and you do have to respect his boundaries (within reason, that is). I just wish you the best and hope it all turns out well. |
I am sorry about your baby and I know you really want another one, and I don't want to hurt your feelings, but I am going to put my 2 cents worth in. I don't think it is the right time or situation for you right now to have a yorkie. Your lab may never do that again, but when it comes to a living breathing being you can not take that chance. And keeping 2 dogs separted in one house will be miserable for eveyone in the house. It wouldn't be fair to the yorkie or to the lab. I am sorry and I know that is not what you want to hear, but I think you know that it is best for now in your mind, but in your heart you don't want to believe it, you want to believe you can make it work because you miss your baby so much. Good luck with whatever you choose. Stay on YT with us, there is so much to learn and then when the time is right for you to get a yorkie, you will be prepared....;) |
What happened is past. But, even though we treat these lil fur kids as our children, we fail to realize that they are dogs....the most docile of pets will do the unsuspected. The lab may have playfully nipped the puppy, but that was enough to cause this horrible accident. Never, never leave them unwatched, or unattended....you wouldn't do this with your children, why would you do it with a 2 pound puppy.... I have 2 pet yorkies 7 & 8 pounds that for the most part are very docile.....until they are both vying for tha wonderful chewy....I've been awaken in the middle of the night by an all out bitch fight going on in the middle of my bed, that husband and I have had to jump in the middle of....if we didn't they could have killed and I mean killed each other.....blood has been drawn. So, bottom line we must be vigilant and aware that they are dogs first, and all the primal instincts will be awakened given the right set of circumstances. |
:yeahthat: :goodpost: |
This is so sad. A friend of mine just had her big dog shake one of her puppies to death. I think he was only playing too rough but its so sad. She still has the big dog and several small dogs. I am so afraid it will happen again. If I were you I don't think I would get another Yorkie. I just wouldn't want to take the chance. There are a lot of other great breeds out there. A bigger dog might have a fighting chance if your lab nipped at it. I wish you good luck in your decision. I know you are devastated by what happened and I am truely sorry about it. |
Oh poor baby :( :( , poor little angel, I know you are hurt I can almost feel your pain, but what makes you think that it wont happen again, you yourself said it only took 3 sec. and it happened?:( :( Maybe a bigger breed dog like someone else suggested:confused:. Good luck, and hope you feel better. |
I just got in and read all the posts after mine. I have never been on the forum "Yorkies For Sale or Wanted" so if I broke the rules in some way by telling you all what the OP should have in her first post I am very sorry and I should have read the rules. I can say that BamaFan looked at both sides, I don't think I would have if I knew earlier. I'm sorry but no way should another yorkie be in your home but another lab would be a perfect match. I need a Tylenol:confused: |
Took my Tylenol, had dinner and read the rules. I didn't break any rules but looks like someone else did!! |

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here........ I have a lab and 2 yorkies. I've had an instance when my lab was playing with the yorkies and got excited and simply ran over them. Hobbs layed on the floor for several minutes and acted like he was severely hurt. It was my lucky day that he was NOT severely hurt, just scared. But I scooped him up and from that day forward, the yorkies are not allowed on the floor with Lamar when Lamar is in a playful mood. I had the yorkies before I got my lab and I had never had a big dog before and was not aware of the risks of letting all 3 play together. But now I am. With that being said, if something HAD happened to Hobbs that day, would that mean that I should never be able to have another big dog while I have yorkies? I would hate to think that that would be the case. I learned my lesson that day and I've adjusted my lifestyle and training style to meet the needs of all my dogs, big and little, and it hasn't happened again. Give the OP a break. OP, I have no problem with you getting another yorkie puppy while you have a lab in the house. Accidents happen. I've had accidents happen between my lab and yorkies. All you can do is learn from your mistakes. Don't beat yourself up over it. My only advice to you, however, especially since you're strapped for cash right now, would be to rescue an adult yorkie that is bigger or get a yorkie puppy that will grow up to be on the bigger side, like 8-10lbs. Also, if you do decide to take on the responsibility of getting another yorkie, you are NOW WARNED! You now know of the risks of bringing a small breed into your home with a lab who has a reputation. You will have NO EXCUSE if something like this were to happen again. If this were to happen again, it WOULD BE YOUR FAULT!!! Just keep that in mind......and good luck on your search! |
I understand where you are coming from since you have yorkies and a large dog. My yorkie had a best friend that was a great dane but I had seen that dane interact with many dogs before I trusted play in the park. I think I would have understood more if she would have come on like you but instead she tried to deceive people and has no plan but just to get another. I feel a rescue who is already going into a second home should not go into a home without funds for good care and that is just my opinion but I'm sure if the rescue dog could talk it would agree with me. Look at it from the side of the breeder and I am not one but can understand their thoughts. If you loved and took care of a litter of pups to 12 weeks would you want one of your babes to go into a home where there lab had just killed their yorkie....I would venture a guess that you would never consider it. I understand it must have been a horrible situation for them, but what I don't understand is why they would want to do it again. Larger dog yes but I mean with a toy dog. I know you mentioned try for a 10 lb dog. Do you know how small that is?? Since we talk in terms of 4 and 5 lb dogs, I guess we get to thinking 10 is large. I commend you for your post, it's just I don't agree with you. Joan |

I didnt feel that you was attacking anyone. I just noticed you posted the rules on a few of the threads where members were asking for a cheaper Yorkie. the rules are the rules and we have to go by them, and I know you was only trying to be helpful. But I was just asking why you was posting them on the threads where people was wanting a cheaper Yorkie,I could see if they was asking members for free Yorkies. I really think it might hurt a new members feelings. Thats all I was trying to say. No hard feelings here. As for the OP I did not know this was the same person who just had a Yorkie die because of a bigger dog, I would NOT bring in another Yorkie and chance it ahppening again. I also have two large dogs a Boxer and a Pittbull. There is no way I would allow them to play together, They are not even allowed in the same part of the house together. and never are my big dogs in the house when Im not home. even thought my dogs are all loving pets, It only takes one second for some thing to happen. and sense it did happen, I really dont think you should try for another Yorkie. They should of never of been allowed together with out someone there. Im not trying to be mean , and I feel so sorry for your loss baby. But please think twice. about bring another Yorkie into your home.even at play a Large dog can kill a smaller breed in just a second. |
