Question [I accidentally posted this in the wrong section, so I'm re-posting it here] Hi everyone. I'm not a breeder, but I do have a question to those of you who do breed and show your doggies: during dog shows, I notice that during the judging, the dog's tail is pushed up towards their heads. Why is this done? I'm just curious. I love watching dog shows, so I've noticed this. Thanks!

tails In GB they think our Yorkies look silly with us doing that...theirs are training to keep their tails down. I guess we do it because when a Yorkie naturally gaits the tails goes up and that is the way we stack them on the table..who knows?

Good question- just one of those things- it has been like that forever. If you had seen dogs in the 70's they had very short tails- look at the kids in the ring today and they all have much longer tails. We have also changed the position of the topknot on the dogs head- used to be much further up -it is now brought down closer to the eyes. Who knows how these things happen but it is the way of the show ring.

When I look at old pictures of top knots, I laugh..or do I laugh now?? Some are so puffed and teased..they can sure make a terrier head look more refined can't they..the longer the muzzle the more teased the top knot.

I was told that it's to make the topline appear shorter and that it shouldn't be over the back. I am VERY new to showing and still learning lots. I am working with my puppy in classes right now and I am NOT trying to push his tail over his back but trying to train him to keep it up in the standing position by gentley lifting his tail and then touchingit when it starts to go down. HOpe I'm doing this right. Irene
