Show ring/judging question A couple members who show have said that a small female sometimes isn't given points because they would be 'wasted' if she's too small for breeding...that made me curious. What about a small male? Are points given regardless of size? Assuming, of course, that the male falls within the AKC standard...but, if that's the case...wouldn't it be required that a female in the ring fall within the standards too? What if the small female isn't done growing...would she not be given points because she 'might' stay too small to breed?

A good judge knows the breed she or he is judging and can tell from experience about what weight the dog will be as an adult based on its frame. They can't start showing until 6 months of age. A smaller male can enter the ring as well as a small female. It is up to the judge to decide the wins. I have seen smaller males win in the ring in the past, but not recently. Usually it is a showing male form 5 - 7 pounds. The larger males just seem to show up better - they say. This doesn't mean that a smaler male can't win. And yes, I was told that my female "Camile" was a beautiful female - but the points would have been wasted on her since she was too small to breed - quoted the judge. I had to agree, even though she was the best in the ring that day - heehehe my opinion. Camile was perfect in every way - just too small! Oh well, that is the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. T.

It all depends on the judge point of view . At the last dogshow I went . The judge didn't give points to the smaller males or the smaller females .

Gazou is right! It depends on the judge. They are more likely to go with a smaller male than a smaller female though. T.
