| What is the average height of a show dog? I'm just curious. What is the average height and weight in the yorkie show? If the dog is say 7 lbs, how tall would that be and how do you measure? From the top of head to the floor or from the top of the back to the floor? I was also curious how much weight gain happens from the age of 1 to 6 years? |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk. I am not an exhibitor, but there are many here who will answer your questions. If I recall correctly from previous threads, measurements are from the floor to the topline at the shoulder. Ideally, the height should match the length from the shoulder to the base of the tail. Average heights vary. Some judges like long leg, others prefer shorter and smaller. It varies by region. If I am not mistaken, there is a grand champion here who is 10 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs just slightly over 6 pounds.

To the best of my knowledge, if a dog is gaining weight after full development, the dog is eating too much.

| The YTCA (breed club) website should have the breed standard description there to read. It also might be here in the YT library.

| My London is on the smaller end of what you'll typically see in the show ring. She's 8 1/2 inches tall (shoulder to ground) and 8 1/2 inches long (base of neck to base of tail)...she's a little under 5 1/2lbs. She's usually one of the smallest adults in the ring, although there have been some smaller than her out there too. I'm attaching a photo of all the class-winning bitches lined up for Winner's Bitch competition in Dallas, TX. London and I are in front (furthest left in turquoise)..she is the Open bitch. As you go right, you have the American Bred, Bred-by, 12-18 month, 9-12 month, and 6-9 month bitches. You can see that London is the shortest except for the 6-9 month puppy. Cruz (male that I'm showing) is closer to 9 1/2 inches by 9 1/2 inches and he's more average-sized I'd say. He's about 5.75lbs. He's a slender boy. I really love his size and amount of leg. He's a nice medium size with a little leg but not too much in my opinion. Everyone has their preferences on what they like though, including the judges.

| She is adorable! I would like to see Cuzz if you have a pic. Thank you for answering. There is alot to the breeding and show world. My lil guy passed away on 1-4-10. It's time for the grieving to end and a new season. I had him 15 years... I never knew about breeders.. I was just lucky.. This time we are doing our homework:). |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Love your photos Michele There is no standard to the height for Yorkies, just weight between 4-7 lbs so you will see lots of different heights in the same ring. If you get a chance to see the DVD of the National Specialty in NY you'll see what I mean- lots of beautiful dogs ranging considerably in height and proportions. Different people like different types. You could have a very tall dog that could weigh only 6 lbs because he is light in bone, or a short dog with lots of bone that could weigh between 6 and 7 lbs. Not saying that anything is right or wrong, but you'll notice that different judges like different types. My Sebastien is 9 1/2 " and weighs 5 1/2 lbs. He has medium bone and is average build- not slim or chunky. I really like his proportions. I noticed that in NY he was on the smaller size, there were many tall dogs there Here is a photo of him next to some other dogs in NY last year, you can see the difference in size |

Breeders normally strive for square proportions - same height as length of topline, like Michele's London | |

| They should be square. Like my Hank, he is 10.5 in length, measured base of the neck to the base of the tail, and he is 10.5 tall, measured from ground to the top of the shoulder blade. Cant wait to get him in the ring, Needs longer coat with those legs. lol Maybe in May at the Roving. |
