Ideal Height and weight for Showing?

Seems like this year it's the small side they are putting up! I prefer middle of the road yorkie. I still prefer the eleganance but have started to change my views on what type I like.

I remember when Kathy Butcher Sawyer judged.....it seemed that everyone took the smaller to her, as she prefers them on the smaller side.

LOL waving will be the last thing on my mind LOL....I forget the camera is in the ring but glad you'll be watching! This is Radar's last visit to Westminster so gonna be bittersweet this year! Maybe next year I'll just go to NY without a dog, I've done that before and enjoyed it alot LOL..no pressure like Vegas!

How old is Radar Now ? Does this mean you'll be retiring him , or just not showing at Westminster ?

Yes, I think it would be fun to go sometime without a dog, a much better visit for sure....although I'm sure that I'd want to be in the ring or at least helping groom for someone

A specialty is where only one breed is shown. They have Regional Specialties and National Specialties. YTCA has the roving National and the National that happens every Feb. in NY, the weekend before Westminster.

A regular dog show is an all breed show.

Thank you so much for your reply. I knew that the Specialty was only for the one breed. If I am understanding it correctly here, what sets it apart from the breed showing at a regular dog show is that it attracts more exhibitors from the breed other than a regular dog show and that's what adds to the different atmosphere, since it is more of the enthusiasts to that specific breed. If I am confused about this, please set me straight. For me to be in a room with all Yorkies who represent to me my ideal image of a Yorkie would be like having a dream come true. I just love to read about all of this here. I always appreciate the help you offer to all of us.

Radar is 5 years old and retiring from All-breed shows. I want to show him at the local specialities here to see if I personally can win a BISS with him but there are only 3 in my area so if he doesn't win one this year he's retired permenantly. So with that said he'll be shown 3 times after NY this year. I, do, however have things coming up to play around with so I'll still be in the ring on occassions this year

You pretty much nailed it. It attracts exhibitors from all over the country & other countries. It's a very intense atmosphere prior to ring time, but there is also a festival type atmosphere. Especially in NY.....so many dog people, so much activity; people meeting in the resturant or coffee shop downstairs, going shopping, sightseeing, Broadway shows. Going back and forth to each other's rooms, playing with dogs, helping each other out with each other's dogs......

My question to you is since you live in Long Island....are you planning on attending any of the shows.

Thank you very much for helping me to understand all of this and for everything else that you do. I am planning on attending on one of the days in February. It will be my first dog show, and I am really excited about it. I feel really at home seeing any dogs and I adore them, but Yorkies especially have completely stolen my heart since I was a teenager. I can only imagine the emotions I am going to feel being at the Specialty next month.

Neither am I this year.....Delilah is still a baby and not in coat yet. Although, she shows beautifully, she still has a mind of her own and hates to be hard stacked...she perfers to self stack, but because she gets distracted at the weirdest times I still can't trust her 100% of the time to keep my hands off of her. I do prefer a dog that self stacks, they make a prettier picture...she's just not seasoned yet.

My Hank is very leggy, he measures 10.5 from shoulder to ground and 10.5 from shoulder blade to his tail base. He has a silk coat that is slow growing. I have put him in the ring 4 times but will wait until July for more coat. He looks like he is walking on stilts. But he has the most gorgoeous color and structure and head. Love those legs.

Hard stacking is when you put a dog into a stack position and your hands are placed on certain parts of the dog's anatomy to keep the dog in position. Free/self stack is when a dog put's itself in the proper stance, holds the position with you only holding onto the lead.

There are certain times when a dog is being examined by the judge when a dog is expected to be in stacked position. On initial entery to the ring, when on the table being examined (the dog is expected to be perfectly still while the judge is going over it's anatomy), when the judge is examining the dog individually after it has gaited and on final group evaluation by the judge. All is dependent on how the judge runs their ring.

Puppy Sweeps are held on Friday for both clubs; YTCA and YTC of Greater NY
(puppy sweeps is a blast, no points involved but, you get to see what is up and coming)
Progressive Dog Show at the Penn Hotel across from the Garden on Friday Afternoon.
Saturday at the NYer YTC of Greater NY - Regular Classes
Sunday at the NYer YTCA - Regular Classes.
