Ideal Height and weight for Showing?
 
Is there an ideal height and weight for yorkies in the show ring?
Is it different between males and females?
I know they aren't to be over 7 lbs but what is the average, esp. height?

You can show a dog over 7 pounds, and many have won. It's probably harder to show a female under 5 pounds than it would be to show a male under 5lbs. Not sure about height, I think it's about proportion, and they should look square, in other words, legs as long as body.

If I recall correctly reading older threads here, 9 inches (at the shoulder) would be the high end of desirable height.

You wouldn't show a female under 5lbs as the purpose of showing is to evaluate breeding stock and reputable breeders wouldn't breed a bitch under 5lbs( I know those that have posted are likely aware of this but thought for others reading this might be informative). I've seen several males though that would have been under 5lbs. I've been told yorkies shown in Canada and along the east coast (except Florida) are typically taller than yorkies shown in the south and from what I've seen that seems to be true.

There is nothing in the standard that designates height. What you want is a well balanced dog. Height at the shoulders should be equal to the length from base of the neck to base of the tail. You will see a bitch that is slighty longer than taller....most breeders prefer that in the females for whelping purposes.

You can get away with showing a smaller dog than bitch. However, the dogs shown in NYC at the National are on the larger size. I understand what you are saying that overall structure (well balanced) is of utmost importance, but would a dog as tall as my 11.5 inch high boys be an unusual sight in the ring -- even where larger dogs are shown?

That is what I was wondering, I have a female out of CH Graffity and a Rothby/ Durrer Dam. She is almost 10 weeks old and seems like she is going to be tall.

I've seen dogs that appear to be on stilts, sometimes not have good body width.....too leggy, and not a pretty picture, at least to me.......I've seen a few on them on the taller side, however, not all judges will put a dog up that is that tall. But, there are other down falls to those that are too leggy....knee problems. There again, health issues. I love a dog with a bit more leg, if they are a good balanced dog, with good movement they do make a gorgeous picture when they are gaiting around the ring with their coat flowing.

Wait a bit, at 10 weeks of age, too soon to tell. Especially with that line. They tend to grow up front and stop.

... show outdoors in grass..that sucks up some leg..if all else is outstanding, I would try it...what have you got to lose..but I would not show unless the coat is fully grow to the floor.

Thank you for your insight. Do leggy ones typically take longer to grow coat to floor length?

Do they hold more outdoor shows in Florida than in other areas Pat? I've never seen an outdoor show here, all are indoors.

It is all about balance. A taller well proportioned dog is a joy to behold in the ring. but with the 7lb limit, that also defacto limits height x length, given proper bone structure.

In terms of Canadian Shows, I've not particularly noticed taller/larger dogs per say compared to where I have observed shows in the US. In canada, my boy is "tall" and is typically the tallest dog in the ring.
In terms of males in Canada, I think the judges for the most part, don't want too "small" a male ie 4lbs or so, also they want a good structured and sized female.

Yep! At least in my experience.....it seems like I'm always waiting for coat. Most all shows in California are out doors.......
