This doesn't show that all show breeders are in it for the money you are getting information from an unreliable source, you know the news media loves to exaggerate and inflate a story to make it newsworthy...No one knows how much she actually gets for her dogs except for her. If you don't know her then you really don't know how much money she gets...but this is beside the point and shouldn't even be in the equation because of the travisty of losing precious living creatures.

That is just a crazy amount for a Puppy or Champion show dog it the best in the world, to much for me. I am upset about the fire, it is just to sad but the money thing makes me think. Do they know what started the fire in the 1st place?????
Someone just lost their dogs in the fire. It is beyond sad. It's insensitive for you to judge the price of her show dogs. Please be sensitive and compassionate instead of talking about her prices.

What a devastating loss. I can't even imagine. That poor, poor lady, and to think of how those poor yorkies passed. I am sick to my stomach thinking about it. I hope the rest can be saved.

As I was reading this thread, I was thinking exactly the same. Also, had we known just how we would feel about Toto, we would have paid anything that our breeder asked for her. Please bear in mind, this is only our feeling .... I cannot even imagine the agony this poor lady is going through.

I just start to cry when I think about what Colleen and her babies have gone through. Tragedy can strike in a split second. You can't always be there 24 hours a day. Whether you lose one dog or 40 dogs, whether they are just pets or show dogs, it does not matter, it is a tragedy. All the insurance money in the world cannot replace a beloved pet. My prayers go out to Colleen and the surviving babies.

as i live in the country and i feel all would be lost and i have insurance and there are times when i am away from home there is not someone watching over my home 24/7
but having insurance would not save my babies!!to me it does not matter what colleen had or did not have
it is just very sad that all these babies died and she is doing all she can to save the remaining few
as far as selling big bucks dog s
i think that was several years ago
she had gone from a show kennel of a large amount of dogs down to around 40 and she told me she was still cutting back and that she had someone coming in everyday for several hours to help with the care of her dogs
i know of a few kennels in texas and other area's that have way more than 40 and i do not think having insurance or fire detectors would save them either it would depend on how fast the fire dept got there and the fire was just not the deadly factor as smoke kills faster and a lot of small towns work on volunteer fire depts
i just would really hate to see this happen to anyone weather it be a show kennel
a pet owner a back yard breeder etc i feel sad for all
as these babies did not deserve to go this way
it amazes me as to how quick people judge others
and this lady is going threw hell right now
does it really matter weather she was liked or disliked?
she needs a lot of prayers and everybody is judging her for not having insurance or what she sold dogs for 10 years or so ago all i can say is wow what is this world coming too!
God speed to the remaining precious creatures and prayers are with the remaining yorkies.

Cry Crazy

You know when I read about this breeder on another forum, I was heart sick. Then I come here, and read some pretty insensitive comments about the cost of her Yorkies. Who the heck cares! And that for whatever reason she did not have insurance. Who cares! Is that supposed to make her deserving of this NIGHTMARE? Come on now, I definately am NOT one to sit and pass judgement on why or why not she had insurance....I am sure if she could go back in time, she would have confirmed that it was paid.

She is a HUMAN, and she is also ONE OF US! She loves her yorkies, just like you or me.

What we all should be thinking is.........what can I do to help? Lets, all think of "if this happened to me" what would I do? I would hope my Yorkie friends would surround me with love and concern, and whatever else they could do to help.

Anyone know of any form of donations going on????

Those that know her, please pass on my condolences.

This really is just so sad and devastating. I don't even know what to say and I cannot even imagine such a huge tragedy. 26 babies lost their lives.... my Lord..... this is just unimaginable..

Default Back to the subject of insurance---

I too am very sad to hear about this fire and the snide comments, from people who have no idea the amount of work that went into creating Crosswinds. I can probably clarify some of the questions about insurance, or lack thereof, or pick up some advice from those of you who know about these things. I have a good number of dogs in residence right now--not nearly what Crosswinds had, but enough that even in a fairly well organized setting with people present it would still be one heck of a job getting them all out in a fire. My home and contents are insured, but not the dogs. It's been my fear that insurance companies don't like homeowners to even own dogs, let alone breed them. Questions about insurance will raise questions about liability for a home based business with clients coming to see puppies. Fear of getting tangled up in a beaurocratic nightmare causes me to "self insure" where the dogs are concerned.

Heartbreaking story, a tragic loss of her dogs and livelihood. Hopefully the spared dogs are all ok, and the owner can begin to make her way back from this horrific event

A few thoughts on some of the sidebar commentary. A friend of mine breeds beagles and his dogs are recognized field champions. He was approached by a Japanese buyer who was willing to pay a significant sum for one of his pups. He did go through with the transaction and shipped the pup abroad. It is a statement about her dogs and reputation that she was able to attract those kinds of fees for her dogs. She deserves a lot of credit for that, and the exact prices really are not anyone's business but the buyer and seller

On the insurance topic, I happen to work in the industry - my firm does merger and acquisition transactions for insurance industry companies and while I do not sell insurance, I maintain insurance licenses. Any breeding facility of this magnitude would never be covered under a typical personal, homeowners policy. It is a commercial exposure that requires a commercial (or business policy) - the risks involved include dedicated structures, the liability of customers coming onto the property, the dogs themselves, all of the business equipment, I can go on and on. I can not comment on the cost of such a policy (it is likely less than you assume it would be) but it does require a business | commercial policy, AND an agent that has familiarity with insuring breeding facilities to ensure you get the best carrier and pricing. Any personal homeowner policy will exclude all of these exposures and if there were a claim made, and the undisclosed business discovered, would likely be denied... If she was in fact not covered, that is a terrible shame but either way that would have only provided financial indemnification - and could not replace the precious lives of the lost animals.

For Crosswinds, It is a sad day to lose so many precious lives...........

I’m Still Here

Friend, please don't mourn for me
I'm still here, though you don't see.
I'm right by your side each night and day
and within your heart I long to stay.

My body is gone but I'm always near.
I'm everything you feel, see or hear.
My spirit is free, but I'll never depart
as long as you keep me alive in your heart.

I'll never wander out of your sight-
I'm the brightest star on a summer night.
I'll never be beyond your reach-
I'm the warm moist sand when you're at the beach.

I'm the colorful leaves when fall comes around
and the pure white snow that blankets the ground.
I'm the beautiful flowers of which you're so fond,
The clear cool water in a quiet pond.

I'm the first bright blossom you'll see in the spring,
The first warm raindrop that April will bring.
I'm the first ray of light when the sun starts to shine,
and you'll see that the face in the moon is mine.

When you start thinking there's no one to love you,
you can talk to me through the Lord above you.
I'll whisper my answer through the leaves on the trees,
and you'll feel my presence in the soft summer breeze.

I'm the hot salty tears that flow when you weep
and the beautiful dreams that come while you sleep.
I'm the smile you see on a baby's face.
Just look for me, friend, I'm everyplace!

This is soo very sad for this poor woman, and her beloved babies. I thought the name cross winds rung a bell, and I looked at my babies papers. My Chip has CrossWinds in his family. There was a Cross Winds Renegade, and some more Cross Winds names. I'm not really sure, but does that mean that he is related to these poor animals?
