My friend that has a 7 yr. old yorkie needs to find a good home for her. She loves to be the only dog which is the problem. They have two other dogs and she is so possessive of her when the other dogs come close she attacks them. She needs a home with no other dogs and preferably a woman that wants to be the center of attention. The owner is just sick about this and wants to be sure she is in a good home. This lovely little creature is in the Phoenix area. Any suggestions

Is this a pup she has had for 7 years or a new one? Is there a way to work with her perhaps?

I talked to her yesterday and she said their is a senior that has no other dogs and really wants a yorkie because her daughter has one. They are going to meet to see if the move would be something the owner feels comfortable in doing. She is just so sad about this. I can't imagine. I would never be able to get rid of my two adorable yorkies.

I hope this senior has a good history of taking care of pups. Often seniors are lonely and may never have had pups...and a yorkie with issues is not a good placement for them.

Hope it works out well.

Now here is a double edge sword! I'm a senior and have many senior friends who have dogs and we all just dote on our babies. The other side of this is "young" people who get puppies, put them in a crate for 8 & 9 hours a day while they go to work. So you see, age has nothing to do with taking care of a pet. ALL people, regardless of age should be carefully screened and a home check done, plus a Vet. reference.

If you re read what I said.....I said that often seniors who have never had pups suddenly want one and placing a pup with issues can be troublesome. It was not exactly worded that way, but is what I said. Seniors are often lonely and people advise them to get a pet. Sometimes it is a great situation, but sometimes not.

I am a senior as well.

I am not trash talking seniors as pet owners...and have adopted to many empty nesters and seniors.

My point is that the entire situation really needs to be weighed carefully.

I just don't think people should be "labeled" is all. Should just word that a home check and a background check should be done, this way no offense will be taken.

I am quoting myself to make it clear what I said.

And...I said that often seniors are lonely...it is true..and looking for company..also true. Nothing wrong with that. A yorkie with issues would not be a good placement for a person who had not had a history of taking care of yorkies. Just the way I feel. I have seen enough bad placements in rescue to know what I am talking about.

I did not discriminate in any way. Sorry you took it that way. But, look at what you said about younger people....that is honestly no different. They don't all crate their pups all day long. You don't think you labeled young people? No...you stated something you believe as did I.

I agree, in that a dog with issues does not make a good pet for a senior. I have a Shih Tzu that I adopted after fostering him for several months at witch time it was discovered that he has many issues stemming from his past witch made him an emotional mess. During adoption days nearly every senior in the market for a little dog stopped to inquire about him & each one of them agreed that he would be too much for them too handle. I believe that some issues can be solved in a senior home , however aggression would not be one of them in my opinion. I would be especially concerned if this senior adopted this pup & wanted or needed to spend time at her daughters home. What would happen between the daughters dog & the mothers dog ?
