I have to reply to the person who posted that the people giving away their two 16-year old Yorkies were heartless. Sometimes, as in our case, it would be heartless to put him down, as opposed to trying to find a loving home to give him the time & care he needs. And for many reasons and "personal"circumstances, cannot provide. Sometimes, giving them away is the most loving thing you can do; and our hearts ache. Please know it is our of our love for him, who we call our son & very hard to do what we are doing. Criticisim only makes people shy away from these sites, which can be very helpful, and make them not seek out understanding and guidance for fear of being judged.

This is very sad & I can imagine very hard for you. I commend you for realizing that you can not give your old guy the proper care & attention he needs in his senior yrs. Many people do not realize the time & care these old dogs need & require & you seem to realize that he deserves much more then you can provide for him & know that times a waistin for him. Have you considered trying to find a Reputable Yorkie rescue for him ? as they will work hard to make sure he is placed in a proper home that can meet his needs. You are rite in trying to find him a retirement home & I wish you luck in finding that for him.

Best of luck on your search.... two rescues refused to take in the senior pair before we took them in....

They are both well no accidents and lovin life...

Thank you ... we very much appreciate your kind words and understanding. I am sitting here today trying to work up the courage to make the call to his heart doctor that we need to make the appointment to put him to rest. He is panting and having labored breathing more often, despite of the 4-medications his doctor has him on. This is really the hardest thing I have ever done. Thanks again.

Finewine51, I am sorry you are going through this. Putting your dog to sleep when he is not doing well is your final act of love for him. Let him rest now when you look back you will know you did the right thing. Sending hugs.

Thank you....we lucked out...a nice couple stepped up and took them ... we really thought that they were going to end up just stayin Yorkies Inc.. we could not let them be PTS if a vet thought they still had quality of life...which they do...more so than anyone thought...they are doin better every day!

I agree that sometimes we are quick to judge. My first thought on reading this post was the same, how terrible & heartless to give up 2 family members after 16 years of unconditional love. The above post reminded me that it's easy to SAY or THINK what you would do until faced with a certain situation. I have never had to give up a pet, but I have seen the pain of others that had to do so. My son is the loving owner of 10 yr old Chester, who was owned by my co-worker. She raised Chester from a pup, and never would have dreamed of living without him until 4years ago when she was fired & had to move in with family members. Her family was willing to take my friend, but not Chester. It broke her heart to say goodbye to him, and I would have hated to be in her shoes!

Ah, it's so easy to judge when you've never been there! I have been there, my sweet dogs got caught in a divorce and I had two kids to take care of. There was no contest ... kids had to come first. But it hurt a lot to part with the dogs and I still remember very well although it's been more than 35 years. I've had to admit twice since then that my home wasn't the best place for a certain dog and had to go about finding the dog a new home. I did and both went to excellent places where they were very well loved and were happy. I still regret that I had to do that. Circumstances change and you never know what's around the corner. I have taken in some over the years and found them good homes and have helped "rescue" others who needed new homes. I would never abandon a pet and have always planned to keep any pet for its lifetime, but sometimes you get dealt something you're not prepared for and you have to do what's best for all concerned.
