A Rescue Dilemma Yorkie Rescue Colorado faces a dilemma. We were contacted yesterday and asked to take in a year and half old male yorkie who had his leg broken Thanksgiving Day. His family cannot afford to have his leg repaired. The vet has given us an approximate price of $3,000 to repair his leg. Seeing that the break happened a week ago it is a more difficult surgery. What's the dilemma? We don't have $3,000 to fix this little boy. If we don't take him the owner is going to have him put down because the dog is in such pain. It breaks my heart to have to turn him away, knowing that the only thing preventing him from having a long happy life is money! And people get angry when we ask a re-homing fee for the dogs we do make well. Little ones such as Reese are the reason. I will continue to look for a way to help him. Hug your little ones, they are so lucky to be loved and cared for. Trish Yorkie Rescue Colorado |
How can I help? I dont have $3000 but.. i do think that perhaps some vets will be generous to a rescue. I know that The alameda vet hospital. has a vet that also teaches at DU perhaps he can tape the surgery and use it at one of his classes? LEt me know!!! |
Aww.. that is truely heartbreaking.... it makes one feel so helpless, wishing I had $$$ to help all of the pups like him... So sorry that you having to face something like this.... |
Do they offer a financing plan? |
How can I help Quote:
Sadly, there are very few vets who will help. Our vet gives us a discount and he's the only one who does. I've called every one of them - as far away as Denver and no one else with discount the fee. Alameda and CSU charge us the same as they charge anyone else, and they are even more expensive than a regular vet. On top of this Mia goes in for a MRI on Monday. Let's all pray for both of these little ones. Sadly - It's all about making money. Trish' Yorkie Rescue Colorado |
What about a credit card or financing the surgery? Then you can get a fund raiser organized...bake sale, pet supplies or whatever...to pay the money back. Is it possible to get a credit card in the name of your rescue just for situations like this? |
Maybe you can ask for donations to help him out. Can you find a vet that would do it probono, or take payments. |
i don't believe that the leg is still broken....it would seem that there will now be permanent damage...so sad. I can't believe this. Tina |
Trish has been on the phone/computer all day trying to find help for this little one! She has even tried to find another rescue that might be able to help. Meanwhile, this poor baby is in pain and the only alternative the owner has if he can't get someone to take him ... the vet he saw suggested he could put him down! How can a vet who has to power to help be so heartless?? He just wrapped it and this happened Thanksgiving day ... I'm certain that it is knitting back and that will cause the surgery to be more complicated!! Please, please pray that we will be able to find a way to help? |
i will call my friend who had that vet as a teacher at du. |

that is exactly what I dont understand, I would give my last penny for my baby. My friend will call the teacher from DU who also runs Alameda hospital. she said to look at maxfund, it supposedly helps owners of animals who cannot afford care. I will look it up. |

I emailed them asking for help. They are a charity organization. they are closed for the night. Hopefully we will get answers tom. Is the baby on pain meds? I do have a lot left over from Armani's neuter that he never got. I will gladly turn them over. Also, where is he? and how old is he? It breaks my heart that he is in pain for over a week. I look at Armani and cant imagine him being in pain and not being able to do anything. Of course I have no children and I am in college and work lol, so I am only responsible for myself and him, no children. However, i think that anytime a family or person takes on an animal of any kind they should be prepared for the financial Long term responsibilies. Anyways, I guess I am just upset and feel helpless. Hopefully someone answers us. I dont understand how a vet cannot help, when they say they love animals. Try my vet at aspen commons animal hospital, I do think his heart is all about the animals and perhaps he will be willing to help. |

Hopefully some vet will find it in his heart to help him. |
Planned Pethood Hi, I am brand new to this forum and joined yesterday. I am here to learn more about Yorkies. I am replying because my friend was fostering an Italian Greyhound this past summer and she broke her leg. The vet quoted a few of $3000 to fix her leg as well, which was too much for my friend. He searched all over metro denver--including MaxFund. He found an organization called Planned Pethood Plus. The entire procedure--operation, cast, and follow-up visits cost about $600.00. Here is a link to the website: http://www.plannedpethoodplus.com/ and was less than Max Fund. He found the staff at Planned Pet Hood Plus to be effective and caring. I hope that this helps! |

This reminds me a little of Bernie's story. When he was turned over to rescue, he had been hit by a car and left for dead. His pelvis and leg were broken...the rescue, like any other, did not have the funds for the several $1000 surgery. I wish I could tell you exactly what they did, I know they had fundraisers...I met several people who worked on Bernie's fundraisers at their annual event last year. What about Chopstix? Does anyone remember all the fundraising that went on for her (him?)... Does your rescue have a website? Can we all get the word out to the "dog-loving" world through email, etc., to check out his story and donate??? I would happily attach his story/website etc. to emails to anyone I think might be moved to donate. If everyone her got the word out to just a few people... I know there are lots of people out their who will donate to save a little rescue guy. Good luck! Let me know the rescue's info, website, etc...I'll donate. |

HaHa - I know how you feel...:D |
I've sent the rescue's link to everyone I know...now if we all did the same. Come on people, we've raised over $300 for flowers before:) ...we can do this One question. Is it possible to get the little guys pic on the website??? As goofy as that sounds, I think it'd help. |
I don't see how we can help from the website? I am not using the D word to get anyone in trouble but it would help if we had a link to paypal or something. |

There is a button on the website to use for the D word...;), and they accept paypal. And his story is there. |
My dad suggested we try to email the celebrities that have yorkies, perhaps they would help us?? I emailed the organization that might help no work. I will wake up my friend now so she can call that vet/teacher. Lets all pray this works, i thought about this baby all night!!! |
I'm sorry you do not have the funds to help this little guy. this happens alot actually. i've seen it first hand since i'm a tech for an orthopedic surgeon. You all ask why the vet doesn't fix it for free or for a lower price. Its because there are so many of these cases that the vet cannot accept one and turn down another. If he did these surgeries for free the vet would be losing out on lots of money. Its not just about the money but i think sometimes people forget that vets are trying to make a living too. most are in debt up to their eyeballs from paying for vet school. Have you guys tried calling one of the rescues over here like united yorkie rescue or rescue me? Would a bigger organization have more money to help this little guy? Another thing to consider is amputation. if you cannot afford to fix the leg perhaps you can see what the price would be for an amputation, usually they are much cheaper. The dog will adapt quite well and won't even notice after a few weeks. instead of putting the dog to sleep this is a much better option, IMO. |
