| My Cali is an advanced obedience dog - will be 4 next month - weighs 3 lbs 14 ounces . She does ring obedience, rally, agility and tracking. I have trained her since day one with a buddy belt or chattiesmom's silk harnesses. In the ring harnesses are not allowed so I use a martingale for those times. I notice trainers always telling people with small dogs that they should use a collar -- not true -- and indicates that the trainer is not familiar with small dogs. Cali is also. Service dog - in fact that is where her training began -- she works for praise and the occasional treat - not because I am stronger than she is. I like. Dog that works happy, not out of fear

| True and you will learn that first thing. A lot of dogs with the working temperament and high energy want that toy or mouthy reward over food every time. A trainer can tell pretty soon if he is a mouthy dog as he's one that bounds around, explores fearlessly, is always pouncing on toys and when working, if offered a treat as a reward the dog just turns away from the treat or is not eager to work for it, whereas a squeaky toy or old sock or his favorite ball will work as a positive reward for his getting his trick right. Some dogs just work for praise from the trainer and could care less about a toy or treat - I've found those to be few and far between.
