| Waste disposal systems-Do they work? I'm wondering if anyone has used any of the "doggie septic systems" such as the Dooley or similar? We have two small dogs now and would like to add one more soon. Currently, we pick up the poop with a hand-held jaw scoop and have a plastic bag handy. This is quite "smelly" especially during this heat wave we are having. I'm wondering how well these septic systems work and do they emit an odor? How far away from outdoor living areas do they need to be placed? I would welcome suggestions for 'yard management' with multiple dogs. |

| It got good reviews on amazon. Any septic system that can be "opened" is going to smell- there's a reason our septic systems and sewers are buried and the pipes leading to them. I'm wondering though, can't you just do this on your own with a galvanized bucket with a lid and some gravel and septic tank tablets? It's the same concept.

| Go to ehow.com they have plans on how to make one from a garbage can. We have been using it for two years now and it works well. We used a flip top can. I can step on the opener and the lid flips up, make my deposit and close the lid. Done. Ours is twenty feet away from our deck and we don't smell it at all. Up keep is minimal just add water and more doggie doolie chemicals as needed. |

| The Surface Water Management Division of Snohomish County, Washington, frowns upon the use of pet waste digesters, stating that they function like broken septic systems and are no better than burying waste. They recommend bagging and throwing away dog waste instead. Warning Pet waste digesting systems will not work well in hard, non-draining clay soils or in cold weather. Though legal, improperly functioning systems can contribute to ground water contamination. Husband is a plumber and said in some states these are not legal. It's illegal to allow waste water (sewer or septic) to run off. Check with your city and state ordinances. You may also need a permit to install.
