New Yorkie Mommy... Need Advice, Please I am going to be a new Yorkie mommy very soon. I am going up this weekend to pay the deposit on my baby girl, and will get to bring her home mid April when she is 8 weeks old. So far I have ordered this for her to stay in while being house/potty trained: Walmart.com: North State - Superyard XT Portable Playard & Gate: Gear. I saw one person on this forum that had a Play Yard kind of like this, and she had a crate in there for her to sleep in. Is this a good idea? I was just going to put a little bed in the area for her, but would it be better to have a crate, so she is more enclosed when she is sleeping? Also, what things do I need for her? Do Yorkies usually use a water dish, or a water bottle? Any advice for a new Yorkie Mommy would be greatly appreciated! I am SO excited, my husband said he doesn't know if he can live with me for the next month... LOL!! Thanks, Sheri

we started with a cage sort of like that one. many dogs will love a create to sleep in. a create will also help speed up the housebreaking process. i read the book - How to Raise the Perfect Dog: Through Puppyhood and Beyond by ceaser millan. he also suggest that a create is the best thing you can do for a puppy. charlie is my first dog, and everyone is amazed how well behaved his is at only 5 months. i read this book cover-to-cover before charlie ever stepped foot into my house and i truely think it helped. try to get this book before you pick out your exact dog, as the first chapter explains how to pick out the best dog for you. i like this book so much, that i've given it as a gift to no less then 5 of my friends when i hear that they are looking into getting a dog. they can't praise it enough as well.

Congratulations mommy to be! You mentioned that you're bringing home your baby girl when she's 8 weeks. Would it be possible to wait until 12? Reason I ask is because the period between 7-12 weeks or so is when pups learn soooo much from their mom and their litter mates as far as socialization, how to behave around other dogs, etc. Waiting that extra four weeks would give her a chance to develop tons more social skills and give you a more outgoing dog. I brought Soph home at 8 weeks (five years ago, didn't know better) and knowing what I know now, wish I hadn't. She won't play with other dogs and won't interact with other people when we're in public or have guests at the house. Good luck with your new baby, you're going to love being a Yorkie mommy.

i've heard a lot of people say to wait until 12 weeks. i got charlie at 10 weeks and he's doing great. it may seem like a lifetime to wait the extra couple weeks, but when the dog is going to live ~15 years, you don't wan't to rush into it.

i have a 10 yr old puppy that i would be picking up on april 11th, what a coincidence! i went to the breeders house and she has the whole generation at the house that the puppies interact with since their birth, and also have a black laborador as a guard dog in which proctect all 8 yorkies (aunt, mom. grandfather, puppies etc.) and plays with Her family including 4 sons and a young 10 year old boy. The puppy also has her 4 littermates to play with and also cousins (puppies) So ill be taking her home around 10 weeks old because it should be fine, i guess it depends on the breeder, or what are yall thoughts?

Congrats on the new baby. I know its hard, but you might want to see if you can wait to pick her up until she is 12 weeks old. She learns so much from her mom during this time. It makes for a much better adjusted dog. As for your questions a pen is a great plan with a crate and puddle pad. Mine uses a water bottle, it keeps her face clean and dry. You could also take this time to puppy prof a little. And decide what kind of food you wish to use. Have you chosen a name yet?
