| Anyone use mineral oil in eyes before bathing? I read in a Yorkie for Dummies book at Barnes and Nobles today that you can put a drop of mineral oil in the eyes before bathing and it would protect them from the irritation of shampoo. I've noticed when I bathe the Betty Boop, the "Boopster", with tearless shampoo, the whites of her eyes get red. I try to be careful, but it's inevitable that she's going to get it in her eyes.

| Several sources for Yorkie care that I have read suggested using mineral oil. However, several people posting in the grooming section of this forum warned that the mineral oil can actually trap shampoo in the eye and cause serious burning. I use tearless shampoo on the face and rinse, rinse, rinse. |

| I've never heard of this nor would I ever put anything in my dog's eyes unless it was prescribed by my Vet regardless where I read it. Besides mineral oil is very viscous and I would think it would at the very least make your dog very uncomfortable and unable to focus for awhile. If you are using a no-tears shampoo and your dog's eyes are still being irritated, try washing and rinsing her head and face with a wash cloth, it's less invasive all the way around.

| I use a small round sponge. That way I can soak up water into the sponge, and gently squeeze it onto her face.

| Both of mine hate water in their faces so I have been using a wash cloth for that reason but I like your idea of a sponge, I'm going to try it. Thanks LilMissy. OP, sorry didn't mean to sideline your thread, just liked this idea.

| I have just finished the 'Yorkies for dummies' book. When I read it I thought it was a bit strange to put mineral oil in the eyes. Brilliant book though. |

| Thanks to all. I'll skip the mineral oil and just use a cloth or sponge to rinse. The bottle says it's used as a laxative. The Boopster said she didn't want her eyes to run anymore than they already do. Lol

| I've never use mineral oil in Prince's eyes, but I have given him a tiny bit as a laxative.

| I just wondered if anyone knew what to do when they get that thick black stuff that comes out the corner of their eyes. I think I saw the groomer use a comb to comb it out but is there something to give them to help that. It's not super bad on Nigel but have noticed it.

| Soap in the eyes! My boy, Mr. Darcy hates the bath at the best of times. I wouldn't put anything in his eyes - mineral oil is very slimy, he would probably hate it. I think the washcloth would be good on his face - will try that next bathtime. |

| If you have ever gotten Johnson's Baby Shampoo in your eyes, you know how it burns! I cannot believe they call it tearless. I put sterile mineral oil (it must be sterile!) in my pups' eyes before bathing their faces and I have never had any issues. I absolutely do not trust any tearless shampoos.

♥ Catherine My Love ♥ Donating Member | I went to a groomer I had never been to about a year ago when my regular groomer was out of town. They put mineral oil in the dogs' eyes there and I didn't know it until after wards. We ended up having to take our little one to the emergency vet - he had a chemical burn on his cornea from it. Maybe if you use the sterile kind like ladyjane said - I don't know anythign about it, except from my bad experience.

Mineral oil is one of the ingredients in many eye drops. They are sterile and safe to use. One for pets is Top Performance Safe Eye eye drops.

♥ Catherine My Love ♥ Donating Member | You know, I hadn't really thought about this until now but maybe they DIDN'T put mineral oil in his eyes and that's why he got the burn.... All I know is that after going to that groomer, he had a chemica burn, and I found out later that that particular groomer uses mineral oil. What if the person who bathed him for some reason forgot the mineral oil and bathed him as his he had the mineral oil in his eyes. Soap in the eye could explain the burn as well.... Interesting.
