| ![]() What's your opinion on retractable leashes? Anyone have an inexpensive source for them?

| ![]() I use both retractable and standard 4 ft or 6 ft leashes depending on where we are going. I think people use retractable in inappropriate situations sometimes and they can't keep control of their pets...inevitably someone get hurt...strangled...bit, hit by cars. Retractables are great when there is a wide open space that isn't quite suitable for off leash. Any other time, I stick with tried and true standard leashes. Lot's of control and I've never had one of my babies get hurt or hurt someone else.

| ![]() Oh...I forgot the second part... I found someone who sells them on ebay in bulk (cause we needed a few for back-up in the cars / travel trailer...) I think he sold them for like 3.99 each in a lot of 12... They were blue and not very pretty. I did a quick search and I can't find it now...but I did see lot's of them listed on ebay much cheaper than you will find in a pet store or at petedge. retractable leash, Pet Supplies, Tobacciana items on eBay.com

| ![]() I agree with Lorene, a retractable leash is good for certain situations but I think it's a good idea to have both. I've also heard horror stories on dogs pulling too hard and breaking the retractable leashes and getting cut or sometimes slicing the owners hands. ![]()

I live in the city, so I would be terrified that the mechanism would fail and they would take off! ![]() I might get a couple for the beach though. Thank you!

| ![]() We have both. I like the retractable leash that way Hot Rod can explore. Fortunately I live in a relatively small town and not the hustle and bustle of city life so it is easier for us. My community only has 13 houses so it's not a problem at all. I do latch it when we go out when we are walking around people and cars. I'm not overly worried about him pulling to hard...he's only 3 lbs so it doesn't take much to get his attention, just a little tug and he comes. I like the retractables because I don't have the extra length when he close by me. I got a larger one...for medium sized dogs. It gives us 16 ft instead of 10. I just shortened the first part of the lead so it retracts more. The weight of the buckle is the same as the shorter one that I have-10 ft.

| ![]() I use a retractable leash for Gracie. I got mine at Target for $9.99. I've had it since she was a puppy and she's 4 now- no problems. I never have it at it's full length either but she's not a puller. I used to have lhasa poo and he was a puller. He had a much nicer retractable leash - instead of being all cord the bottom part was a regular leash so if it wrapped around your legs you wouldn't be scarred for life. ![]()

| ![]() I have a retractable and standard leash. I only use the retractable when we are outside in my own yard or in a safe area. I use the standard on walks and everywhere else. I really like the retractable but I get so nervous that one day it will just snap. I had Lily on the retractable leash once and she ran around me in a circle, my hand slipped and the leash wrapped around my arm and sliced me. ![]() ![]() I'm more careful now.

| ![]() I had a retractable leash once and Simon took off after a squirrel (just playing) but the cord was around my leg and cut open my ankle. I had stitches and haven't used one again. Please be careful when you do~ |
