I think people use retractable in inappropriate situations sometimes and they can't keep control of their pets...inevitably someone get hurt...strangled...bit, hit by cars.
Retractables are great when there is a wide open space that isn't quite suitable for off leash.
Any other time, I stick with tried and true standard leashes. Lot's of control and I've never had one of my babies get hurt or hurt someone else. | That's very true.
I live in the city, so I would be terrified that the mechanism would fail and they would take off!
