Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Once again - which "real" bones are safe? So, I've taken Marcel OFF of Bully Sticks for now to see if they've been contributing (or the cause itself) to his suspected ibd/ibs/colitis (Bullies are rumoured to be the cause of diarrhea/digestive upset for various dogs). However, I must find safe chew things bc he is TEETHING like mad, his neuter is scheduled for Sept. 19th and he has almost an entire double row of teeth - so I want him to chew as much as possible before his neuter/teeth yanking date. Which real bones (again) are safe? And, VERY important - those of you who switched to real bones: was there gastric upset when you started using real bones?

| bones Hello, I like beef rib bones. They are the right lenght and width and dont splinter. Just make sure you eat most of the meat off and bbq sauce. The yorks love em!!! I dont have any tummy upsets either. Make sure they are not too thin or short enough to swallow. Take them away when they are. Good luck, Lynn |

| I give my kids bully sticks and they love them. Lily is in the same situation...she is getting spayed in a couple weeks and has a double set of teeth. Lately, I've been concerned because Riley has MVD and the bully sticks are like all protein. I just recently realized this. What to do, what to do? I really can't recommend anything else right now because I'm trying to stay away from everything. We can't trust any companies it seems.

| I feed my yorkies raw meaty bones, these are the safest as the bone is soft and is covered in soft meat. Some examples are chicken wings, drumsticks, lamb chops, lamb ribs, turkey and chicken necks. He will consume all of these, every last bit. However if you just want something for him to chew on then you can use raw beef bones such as marrow or knuckle bones but make sure that with these he does not consume them as these are recreational bones. I prefer to use rmb's because they get a good teeth work out and can eat them all. The most important thing is that the bones MUST BE RAW, NEVER COOKED. Cooked bones are VERY dangerous. I did not have any gastric upsets, the opposite in fact. |

| yes you can! Layla has a few marrow bones in the freezer.. haven't actually given them to her yet, but if you give marrow bones and it comes with the MARROW STILL ON IT, scrape MOST of it off, leaving just a bit left as it is good forthem,. but very fatty.... and dont' give them other food within 30 min before and after the bone... somehing about them not mixing someone told me.... i forget the details. but i do know that marrow is extreamly good for them! |

| Yep you can, the thing about no other food is when you feed raw you should not feed any kibble within 5 hours of it because they are digested very differently. However if its a beef bone then it won't matter, its just if they are actually consuming it. Yes if you get a marrow bone then scrape most of the marrow out, it is very good for them but if they eat too much then it acts as a laxative. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i just gave morgan a raw beef rib bone and she wants absolutely nothing to do with it. i held it and she licked at it but that's about it. she is now sitting in her kennel at the total opposite end from the bone. she hates it. i was hoping for better results

| That is the reaction you may well often get with a beef bone. Try something meatier that she can actually eat such as a chicken wing, drumstick, lamb chop or even a chunk of turkeys neck. |

I have a turkey neck in teh freezer. I'll try that tomorrow. I'm working my way up to all raw meat. i figure i'll start out by giving her something on the weekends and see how it goes.
