| Vegetables and Fruit vs. Dog Good My new guy, Dax, is going to be here in 2 days. He is my first Yorkie and I am really concerned about what to feed him. I have read on some websites that the best thing to give him is raw vegetables and fruit and other puppies seem to be doing fine on just dog food! What is the best thing? Also if you do feed your puppy vegetables and fruit how much do you feed them and how to you prepare them (mashed, cut?) Any help would be greatly appreciated... Abbeysue |

| I posted something about fruits and veggies. Here's an excerpt from it regardling fruits and veggies: Vegetables. Most veggies are OK for dogs, either raw or cooked. Stay away from onions and garlic because they can cause anemia in dogs. Fruits. Dogs will eat both fresh and dried fruits. Stick with apples, berries, bananas, and seedless watermelon. Don't let your dog eat too much! Too much fruit may upset your dog's digestive system. Hope that helps! I give Fred dog food (Eukanuba) and give him fruits and veggies as a treat but not as a meal. When I give it to Fred, I cut it up in little squares so it'll be easy to chew. |

| thanks! Thank you for your advice...how did you choose which food to give your puppy? My guy, Dax, has been eating all vegetables and fruits so I totally have no idea what to do once he gets here. abbeysue |

| I really didn't choose the food. My breeder chose it! It was something he was used to eating so I continued to give it to him. Are you getting your pup from a breeder? Perhaps since your breeder has been feed him fruits and veggies, you could ask what s/he would prefer if you decided to change him over to doggy food. |

| No grapes or raisins either!!! Mine are not on a raw diet... I would personally stick with the kibble that your breeder recommends. And then you can just give them a little fruit and veggies here and there as a treat. Not too much, like Nat said though...ewe! I dont' think you wanna clean up after a puppy that had an upset stomach! Mine love carrots, oranges, green beans, you name it!

| The only problem I have is I am not getting him from a breeder. The girl that is giving me her puppy is doing so because she is being relocated and cannot take him with her. What did your breeders suggest? Why? |

| You just want to keep him on whatever he is already eating right now.... Anytime you change their food, you run the rist of upsetting their stomach... you always want to slowly integrate the new food by mixing a little of the new in with the old.

| Dogs can't digest vegetables very well - so if you are using them as a large portion of the dogs meals they need to be mashed. I do feed mine some vegetables but only as a small part of the meal or as treats and fruit I only give rarely as it contains loads of sugar and will rot their teeth if used too often IMO. |

| I give Maximus Innova....but he has also eaten Royal Canin 33 but it made him a little itchy...Good foods can be found on the whole dog food journal list..(it was listed on a previous thread under recommended foods..I'm sure it will come up in the search)..some foods that are fed and found on the list are Wellness, Solid Gold, Innova, Blue Buffalo, Back to Basics...basically you want a food with NO by-products and meat as the first ingredients..chicken,turkey, lamb, beef and not alot of fillers..good luck..you can get some of them at Petsmart or Petco but you can also go to each individual website and see their distruibutors

| Hi Abbeysue and Welcome! Just had to tell you... I had a red toy poodle named Daxton - Dax for short - for 15 years. He passed away last April. Love the name you picked! And to answer your question... I think I'm in the minority here so don't speak up often on food issues. Tatum (my Yorkie) does not get ANY table food. She eats her dog food and dog treats. We had such an issue with Dax when I lived next door to my grandparents who watched him when I was at work because they fed him off the table all the time. When I moved away from them, Dax weighed 15 pounds! He had knee problems because of the excess weight - he was only supposed to weigh about 7 pounds. The vet put him on a diet right away and once he got back down to a good weight, his other problems went away. I know that the people here feed their Yorkies all kinds of food as regular meals and as treats but we're sticking to straight dog food. I've also noticed that Tatum never begs at the table and I can even sit on the couch with her in my lap and eat anything and she'll never even give it a second glance. Use your best judgement but if you do "people food", try to keep it healthy.

| I was recommended by my vet to feed 1/3 kibble diet and 2/3 fresh food diet. He suggested vegetables such as squash, sweet potato, carrots and suggested white fish, lamb or turkey over chicken, beef and pork. This vet is has a more natural approach to his treatments and I like that he doesn't want to bombard my puppy with unnecessary vaccinations and foods full of preservatives. In regards to kibble, I think as long as the kibble is natural/holistic you're giving you're puppy something that's good for him. A good rule of thumb is to read the ingredients labels...if you wouldn't eat the first 6 ingredients then I wouldn't give it to your dog. |
