It's been a year since Biggie has had a lot of his vaccinations and the vet has been sending notices in the mail that he is due for another round of the same vaccinations [ie: rabies].

Are these necessary?? Sorry if the question sounds stupid but Biggie already had these shots and I thought they were just a one time thing. Does Biggie have to get these shots YEARLY?

Yup! They are yearly.

No, I am not a vet, but I am definitely not in favor of annual vaccines as a pet owner. By law, some states and/or counties may require rabies every three years or so, but after the initial round as puppies your dog should be well immunized. There is a lot of controversy right now which you can research on the internet about the over-vaccination of our pets and how it can actaully cause harm to the animals from minor problems like allergies to more serious concerns like hydroencephalitis and cancer.

It is a personal choice but I would see if there is a homeopathic vet in your area and call them for a consultation to discuss it. You can also research the homeopathic vets online and the many articles that have been written on the subject.

Everyone has to decide what they are comfortable with but I would do some research before I made an appointment for any more vaccines. Even if you do decide to do more, usually a schedule of every three years is fine.

So will your vets see them if they are sick. Vets here won't see the dogs without the rabies vaccination as it is required by the state

In UK we don't have rabies thankfully but all our other vacs are annual and many of the insurance companies won't cover your pet if they aren't up to date with the vacs.

Around here they give the first rabies shot, one a year later, but after that it is every three years. Vets around here also tell me they "can't" see the dog when you bring him in unless you let them update his rabies shot.

We live in Michigan. The rabies here is due after the puppy shots are done with and then they come back after a year. After that it's due every three years. Anyone heard about DHLPP due only every two years?? I have always went yearly, but this time the vet stated that they will be good for two years from now on. Anyone heard about this??

Every year Biggie will need booster shots. It's just like humans and the flu shot. It's only good for one year.

I have heard about it. There is a developing theory that some vets are starting to listen to that we are over vaccinating our pets and it is causing some serious health issues as a result. Please do your research on vaccinations before you agree to them. There is lots of good info on the internet with studies and the results.

Titers can be done to to see if the vaccine is still in the system. Most vaccines are not required by law. It is totally up to you. Rabies is one exeption as most places require it by law.

For the sake of your babies, please do your research before blindly following what the vet says.

It's the same here. It's against the law to have a dog that's not vaccinated against rabies and I live in a city that will DESTROY the dog if it's bitten someone and doesn't have up to date shots. No if ands or buts. My dogs all get yearly boosters and the rabies shot is good for 3 years.

my family has always had a "dont mess with it if it is not sick approack" i have never ever had a flu shot and i am very selective about the shots that tobiy gets

I just received an e-mail from a site on canine epilepsy. I was told that one of the possible causes of epilepsy could be overvaccination. Here's part of the e-mail and then some links for more information. Hope it helps to clear things up. ~Jojinator
