Question Thoughts on Microchipping?

I'm going back and forth on microchipping Layla. In August we are leaving her with a babysitter while we go to NYC and they have a fenced in backyard where she lets our her two labs and Layla to potty... Layla is NOT a wanderer and is a very cautious little girl... part of me wants to microchip her in the event that something should happen but then the other part of me says.. if someone finds her... they would never bring her somewhere.. they'd keep her... which i know is no reason NOT to microchip her... ahhhh.. i'm just so nervous leaving her for 5 days... i think that is more the issues.. i've never left her for more than one night and that was with my parents.. the trip is over a month away and i'm already stressed about it...

I'm going to set up an appointment to microchip Paddington during our next vet visit (in a week or so) I think it is very important, since I don't keep a collar and tags on him.

Kayah is not a wanderer either... she listens to me very well.. but I did it anyway.. you just never know.. ya know? I mean, what do you have to loose? at least Layla will be protected in case anything ever does happen (knock on wood)

If I had to do it again, I would! 100%

We just had Ginger and Bernie microchipped at yorkie day. I decided to go through with this.

What if someone "napped" them and said they were theirs (it happens, search YT) What if they ended up at a shelter without their collars? What if..... With a microchip I prove they are mine.

Awhile back, a self-proclaimed "good samaritan" in the area where I live, dog napped someones dog who she thought was not taken care of properly (often, a matter of opinion). The family thought the dog was lost. They were heartbroken. Then the dog (with a change of appearance due to a drastic hair cut) was made available for adoption through a local shelter/rescue.

The original owners saw the dog and realized it was theirs...the microchip was their only proof.

Food for thought.

Default Microchipping

My Golden was microchipped in 1995. In 2006, when I was moving to a colder climate, my sister gave my golden a new home so that she could stay in Florida (when I was moving to Virginia from Florida, I pictured, cold, snow and burrrrrrr). The first Vet appointment my sis had with her, I got a call to verify change of ownership. Turns out, they were holding Amber in a back room at the vet's office, waiting to determine whether or not she was stolen.

Point? Microchipping can work.

That reminds me of a something I read on YT awhile back.

Someone had rehomed their dog and the family who took him ended up placing him in a shelter...the old owner was contacted due to the microchip. She drove (it was several hundred miles) and rescued him.

I believe he was a golden too. Does anyone else remember this???

I don't like the idea of sticking something like that in Diesel. Diesel is always with me and does not run. If we are out in public he is always on a leash or in my arms. I know that something can always happen. I also know the the microchip[ is not universal. Each company has a different code and not every vet or shelter will use the company. PLus not all vets will even have the equipment to check for a microchip. I think this is really a personal choice more than anything.

I got both of mine chipped and I am glad. If they were stolen and found them it would be my word against theirs that they were mine but the chip proves they are mine

I didn't think Adonis was a "wanderer" until I found out the hard way.

He's usually right up my butt. But one time, when I was replacing my back fence, he wandered to the street behind me

Another time, I was helping cousins clean out their flooded home after Katrina. Well, he followed me to the street, and I wasn't paying attention, he didn't follow me back to the house. I searched about 2 hours and so did both my cousins before he just "walked right back up". I was crying, knocking on doors, driving the neighborhood calling him. We all 3 think he was in someone's home. Was no way he doesn't come when called.

I do keep a collar on both with all their tags on them. When I walk them, we use harness.

I too, will have to leave mine with someone in early August for a trip to Austin. I feel much better knowing both have tags, and a microchip.

So both mine got a microchip this past 6 months.

My boy got chipped when he was nuetered and the vet wants to wait and chip my girl when she is spayed. So what I plan to do at the end of next month. Just in case someone would try to keep one of them and took them to a vet they would know the dog didn't belong to them but me.

I am going to try to teach not preach here LOL you must do more research as there are only 2 types of microchips and both can be read by the same scanner that most all vet and every shelter has. As a breeder I will be microchipping all puppies that I have beginning August 1 for the protection of the baby due to the high theft rate of Yorkies.

Personal choice ? Yes you are correct but consider this - suppose as happened to my daughter who recently was involved in an auto accident and someone not knowing what all was in the car let her two darlings out( some how they had gotten out of the car seat with a cover on it that was in the back seat ) when opening the door to try to help my daughter - The "kids " ran and of course would not come to strangers - my daughter was unconcious and unable to call them - They were taken by strangers and only because her dogs ( and all of mine )are chipped could I track them down and recover them -
What I am saying is that no matter how good and well trained our babies are , we never know just when, do to no fault of ours or theirs we won't be there to protect them and this could be the tiny grain of rice size chip that brings them back. Just something for you to consider and I say all this in the very nicest and not critical way.

I don't see why anyone wouldn't microchip their dog. It's a quick little stick and then it's over. Of course nothing is 100% effective in getting your baby back to you, but I'd rather up the odds a little. More dogs are returned to their owners since microchipping has started. You just can't be too safe really - you never know what will happen. You wouldn't say "well, I don't think I'll wear my seatbelt because there is a possiblity I could die in a wreck even if I wear it." No...everyone knows you have a much better chance of survival if you wear your seatbelt. I recommend that everyone microchips their pets

you guys are all right... i'm going to get it done... i think that by thinking of getting it done i was letting myself think she might get lost and that scared me to death, but i guess being ignorant about it will only hurt us both in the long run.

i'll call my vet on tuesday and make an appointment. Does anyone know... does it hurt her?? so many people had it done when they were spayed or neutered, is that ebcause it is painful? Layla tends to be a bit of a wuss with needles and getting blood taken. Any suggestions on which brand is better?? someone mentioned there were two types...
