Giving Shots Have any of you given shots yourself? I did with my yorkie's first litter back in May. It went really well. I go through a site online to get all my supplies. I just wonder how many others do this. I know vets don't completely support this, but it saves alot of money. Any suggestions on where you give them, and stuff like that? Thanks in advance and God bless, Heather

I did it for the first time on my parents dobies. I ended up paying around $21 for 3 puppies. I used Vanguard Plus 5. I lift the skin on their shoulders and poke right through the skin. I don't have the guts to do it into the muscle. I just ordered more vaccines for when Joy has her puppies. I think she will only have 2 but I ordered a box of 25, came out cheaper per shot. What brand of vaccine do u use and what site do you get them at? I got mine at Valley Vet, they give you the pet health record sheets free with the purchase of a box of 25 vaccines. Oh and shipping was cheaper there $12 for next day shipping. When I vaccinated the dobies I did it while they were eating they didn't even move, just kept eating lol. I just hope I have the guts to poke my lil yorkies when they are born lol, small dogs are huge whiners.

I have done vaccinations myself as well, and just like adinasmommy .. i gave the shot on the neck it didnt seem to bother the dogs at all.... but the dogs i gave vaccines too were bigger and had more fat in the neck.... a yorkie is all skin and bones... do you think in bothers them that there is not fat where you put the vaccine? i dunno, just curious myself

I have never done that...i think you have to be very carefull when doing so...first off, you have to make sure that you buy good quality vaccine and if they are properly kept and transported. If not, they will "go bad" and either have no effect on the body or even make them sick Another thing is, make sure you know how each shot should be applied, some will be in the skin and others need to be in the muscle...so i would suggest doing your homework prior to attempting...it's always good to save money but make sure it is safe!

Where I get mine it has all the info on how to give the shots. They ship them in ice packs next day air so when they got here to me they were still cold. Is there a way of knowing if the vaccine is still good just by looking at them?

Gee...i wouldn't know that. Just to be on the safe side, i would keep the bottle/containers everything..in case anything happens you can always find examine the vaccine. Just as a prevention...but if it has been working so far, i would say stick to it, just don buy from companies who you don;t really trust! | |
