Dogs can eat Turkey. It just can't be seasoned. Whats the reason they can't eat Turkey? You can Google it and see its okay

Generally speaking, commercially produced dog foods, especially those that have been certified by national veterinary societies, provide a good, safe and convenient way of feeding your dogs. However, some people find that their dogs are sensitive to some of the preservatives in these foods and want an inexpensive alternative. Other people worry about what they should be feeding their dogs at times when they have let the dog kibble supply run out, or are in some circumstance where commercial foods are not available. Some other people simply don't feel that the monotonous diet of the same kibble all of the time is good for their dogs, while others worry about trace nutritional elements that might be missed any one set diet.

Actually a nutritious and balanced diet based on ?people food? is easy to prepare.

A 12 oz portion is suitable for one day?s ration for a 20 lb dog.
4 oz (1/2 cup) protein ? any meat, chicken, fish or eggs (all cooked).
4 oz carbohydrate ? for example cooked rice or grains, pasta, cooked cereals such as oatmeal, potatoes or even bread (packed tight when measuring).
4 oz vegetables ? any cooked vegetables (obviously not potatoes or other high carbohydrates). Carrots, broccoli, turnips, green peppers, green beans, etc., but not onions which contain high sulfur content which is bad for dogs.
Simply mix the contents together or not as you choose.
While this basic diet is balanced it can be improved by some simple supplements.

To mix the basic supplement use
1 cup debittered brewers yeast
1 cup wheat germ
2 cups powdered milk
? cup powdered kelp
Mix together and store in a cool dry place.
To improve the diet quality add 1 tsp of the basic supplement for each 12 oz portion of the food mixture and 1 tsp vegetable oil (I prefer corn oil or flax oil since they have high content of linoleic acid which is good for the dog?s skin).
12 oz of the basic diet is appropriate for a 20 lb dog, you would double this daily ration for a 40 lb dog, triple it for a 60 lb dog or halve it for a 10 lb dog. Watch the dog?s weight and adjust portion sizes accordingly.
Thank you so much for posting this, I've just started making my yorkie's food and read about the supplements they might need. I also read about Bromelain powder, do you know anything about it? I think I'll add a tad bit to the supplement mixture.

Thumbs up

My dogs are so grateful for this Sticky! I made ground turkey and veg stew for them yesterday, and have never seen them eat like that. I do free feed dry food, and will just in case I miss some important vitamins. I enjoyed it and there is enough for 2 more days. I think it will ultimately end up being much healthier and less costly once I get the hang of preplanning for them. There are plenty of recipes to choose from. Thanks everyone for taking the time to post them.

It is dried grains and veggies, and some dried fruits in a bag with a scoop. You measure out enough for a couple of days, mix it with water and simmer for 8 minutes until it's all soft and about the consistency of dough. You add several ounces of meat (recommendations are included in the instructions according to the weight of your dog) either raw or cooked and several teaspoons of essential oils, then refrigerate until it's used up. So far our picky little eater prefers it over Cesars.

You can Google Dr. Harvey's online. Their site gives you links to several online stores you can order it from.

I have some ? about this. What essentials oils do you add and since it sounds softer would it be good to mix with kibbles?

Here is an interesting article on garlic. I personally, have sporadically given garlic to my dogs, Luca and Diesel.
This is a great article - thanks for posting it! this author seems to know her stuff.
apparently a dog is more likely to get anemia from tylenol as they would have to ingest a very large quantity of garlic to result in damage. for a 10 lb canine the suggested amount is 1/2 a clove of daily. that's seriously a tiny amount.
Why bother when it's so controversial? because apparently there are all kinds of health benefits. i will be using fresh minced garlic for my little one - well 11lbs - not so little.
BTW - I'm new here - i was searching recipes and i ended up here. my favorite kibble has added 'by-products' so i'm done with kibble. done.
my yorkie is Mateo and he's just the best little beastie - we're just part of his pack.
i guess its unnecessary to say that yorkies are the best.breed.ever.

I am glad to have found this article. I have zero desire for my girls to have commercial anything. I have been cooking them chicken and rice and giving them the occasional bite of barbecued pork (and I mean bite, since it is so heavy and rich). I am planning to use different lean meats and eggs for protein and I am going to read this article through again for starch/veggie ideas. I wrote to a forum on Facebook today about the diet I have been feeding and how I am noticing improvement in these two since they got here last week. I was told I was going to give them pancreatitis and that I needed to get them on kibble asap. Seems my research indicates that kibble IS the problem! Still I want to be careful! This article makes me feel better about things but I am going to proceed with caution. Thank you for posting this! Besides, who wants to eat the same exact thing everyday? We would get bored and I have been around dogs long enough to know they get bored from monotony also.

Animal Smiley 049 Turkey recipe

My little 5 lb. yorki just was not eating so I decided to make up a recipe for him. I was feeding Merrick canned and kibbles for puppies but my Jackson just would not eat. I bought a tube of ground turkey and cooked the whole tube in a skillet like you would a hamburger. Store it in fridge. I baked a sweet potatoe, and cooked brown rice. Store all this in fridge. To make his meal, I use 1 teaspoon of merrick canned puppy food (chicken), 1 teaspoon of chopped turkey meat, 1/2 teaspoon sweet potatoe, 1 teaspoon rice. Mash all together with fork, micro wave to warm, about 7 seconds. Last I grate 1/2 teaspoon romano or parmesan cheese on top. Jackson loves it and has gained a little weight I think. I think I probably need to add a couple of supplements to this. I am reading more about this now and maybe I will add Dinovite and LickOchops. Anyone have suggestions about the supplements?

I have been making my Yorkies their breakfast for the past year or so but they get bored really quick so one morning I feed them baked chicken thighs, skinned then the next day I saute ground turkey, add either mixed rice or mixed frozen veggies and try to add either potato or sweet potatoes to give them a variety. The rest of the day they have dry food in their dish. Does anyone see a problem with this routine?
