| Giardia is nasty business. It's a common parasite usually passed through water that causes extreme diarrhea. It is treatable w/ medication but is messy and no fun. If you have multiple dogs it can sometimes be hard to beat because the parasite is passed through their stool as well and therefore if ingested in any way will continue it's cycle in the animals intestines. It's obviously not limited to dogs only. A lot of hikers get giardia from drinking from springs or rivers. Your vet can do a simple snap test w/ a fecal to determine if your pet is positive for the parasite or not and then prescribe the appropriate medication.

| Thanks...I am going to look at a puppy tommrow and the lady said one of her other puppies she has already sold had it. She told me that she is treating all of them for it to be on the safe side. I have heard of it on here, but I didn't really know what it was. I hope she doesn't have it too. We aren't picking her up tommrow just looking so hopefully she will be cured if we get her.

It is my understanding that the pup never really getes rids of it and will always be a carrier. Stress can make it flare big time. Many dogs will also become anorexic during an extreme flare. Dehydration is a concern when the diarrhea takes over. It can be explosive and full of blood as well. I don't mean to alarm you, but Sissy had a very bad case of Giardia at 9 months old. We were at the vet 3 times within 5 days for sub-Q hydration and different meds and I was giving her Pedialyte by syringe every hour. It took about a month of treatment before she finally tested negative. She did experience some anorexic behavior and stopped eating kibble at this time (which is how I began cooking for her). I really believe her daily breakfast of organic whole milk yogurt with 6 active, live cultures has helped keep her system healthy.

Peeka Boo I See You! Donating Member | I wanted to mention i have had personal experiance with this it took us almost 2 months to get rid of it when Daisy had it. If the breeder will hold the puppy till it's clear from it thats what i would do because it can contaminate your entire yard and house and it is very very very very hard to get rid of!!

| Thanks soo much. The breeder is holding on to her a little longer anyways because she is still too small to bring home. So hopefully she will keep her longer if she needs to. This is awful is there anything I can do after we go down there tommrow to make sure I don't bring it back home with me?

I would wear some old flip flops that you can toss into a bag before you get back into your car and either toss them or bleach them before wearing them at home again. We had a giardia outbreak at our facility before and anyone who entered or exited the kennels or yards had to step into trays filled with bleach to kill the giardia.
