Icon2 Pet Food Recall!

I just saw this article. (I apologize if it's already been posted as a topic!) My girl doesn't eat Iams, but I know it's a popular brand...

Pet Deaths Prompt Recall of Pet Food

By ANDREW BRIDGES, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 29 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall. Product testing has not revealed a link explaining the reported cases of illness and death, the company said.

"At this juncture, we're not 100 percent sure what's happened," said Paul Henderson, the company's president and chief executive officer. However, the recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier, since dropped for another source, spokeswoman Sarah Tuite said. Wheat gluten is a source of protein.

The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6 throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Company, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said.

Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site ? http://www.menufoods.com/recall ? early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (866) 463-6738.

The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies, including Procter & Gamble Co.

P&G announced Friday the recall of specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch cat and dog wet food products made by Menu Foods but sold under the Iams and Eukanuba brands. The recalled products bear the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, P&G said.

Menu Foods' three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J., Henderson said.

Henderson said the company received an undisclosed number of owner complaints of vomiting and kidney failure in dogs and cats after they had been fed its products. It has tested its products but not found a cause for the sickness.

"To date, the tests have not indicated any problems with the product," Henderson said.

The company alerted the
Food and Drug Administration, which already has inspectors in one of the two plants, Henderson said. The FDA was working to nail down brand names covered by the recall, agency spokesman Mike Herndon said.

Menu Foods is majority owned by the Menu Foods Income Fund, based in Ontario, Canada.

Henderson said the recall would cost the company the Canadian equivalent of $26 million to $34 million.

I know that the Nutro Natural Choice kibble wasn't on the recall list, but I'm afraid for Toto to eat it!! I also know what I feel right now is blind panic .... I will try to think more calmly before time to give it to her. Any other thoughts??

i don't feed anything on the list and i only feed dry but if it were me i'd probably switch just because i'm paraniod. It doesn't say what exactly in the wet foods is making the animals sick so you do not know what to avoid. Even Nutro is on the fist which is scary. There are a lot of foods on that list. Granted most are crap but still scary. Lots and lots of people probably use them because that's what they can afford or they don't know anybetter. its a shame

I see what you mean after I read the list

I, myself, to play it safe would throw it out and feed something else. It's your call though.

i still am in a panic over this, too!! romeo is too young and would never survive liver failure!

Thanks, Jessy! That was my first impulse. After remembering why she is on the kibble, I tried to get a grip and think it through. We only decided on this after very carefully evaluating the percentages and the content .... Toto is severely overweight and we have been dealing with this for some time now. I'm thinking that perhaps we should just go back to Royal Canin Yorkie 28 and fight her obesity another way. The really sad thing is, she is such a prissy, picky eater .... she really loves this kibble!! Wouldn't ya know it?!?

We have some Nutro Natural Choice pouches, and I mixed some with the puppies' kibble this morning right before reading this list. They each ate about 1/4 pouch before I picked it up. I really hope they will be okay. We don't feed it to them regularly, I thought it would be a treat. I am kicking myself for not reading the list before I fed them. I never thought Nutro would be on there.

So, I called the number on the recall notice. Busy. Then I called Nutro to find out the specifics, but apparently they are closed on the weekend. I am so upset!!! I will not even go near the Nutro aisle again after this. If their food is on recall the least they can do is to answer the phone.

How scary!! I am so glad I don't feed my babies any of those foods, but Miko has been getting sick on the Hill's prescription u/d since we got it last Satuday (which was supposed to make him better), so I don't know if it was related or not. He has liver problems already and the last thing he needs is more liver/kidney problems. He had a seizure yesterday right after he ate his food(he hasn't had a seizure in I don't know how long), so we took him off of the Hill's u/d and put him back on his old food until we can figure something out. He's been fine ever since. I had no idea that Hill's had a recall at the time though. They say only science diet was affected, but I'm not taking the risk.
