Question

i went to Petland y'day and got free samples of the AVODerm (never heard of this one but the ingredients looked good) and the Pinnacle. I had never heard of either of these brands but neither have corn, wheat, or byproducts in there. The kibbles are small and i have offered the Pinnacle to the girls but so far, they haven't been interested. I then went to another mom&pop pet store and picked up free samples of Wellness and Nature's Variety Raw Instinct, which is grain free and high meat protein. I haven't tried the girls on any of these yet. They also carried the Merrick's canned dog food. We tried the Chicken Pot Pie last night. My puppy gobbled it down but she had diarreah this morning (probably from changing foods) but my older girls wouldn't touch it. I will just introduce the new stuff gradually to see how they react. I usually just mix in a little beef or chicken into their kibbles and they eat that just fine. They eat the Eagle Pack Holistic Chicken since it has a really tiny kibble. So many of the foods have too large of kibble no matter how good the product is, my girls cannot get their mouth around it!
If anyone has any comments on any of these brands, i would appreciate any input.

Check the ingredients on the Hill's Cans/bags. I know all the vets push that because they get a kickback from the manufacturer but the ingredients will tell you if it is a good product or not. All the Hill's that i have checked, have corn, wheat and/or by products in there...all are no no's in my book. Just thought you might want to know that the vets are getting paid to push that product.

I have never heard of some foods mentioned...Go Natural, Fromms, Verus, Eagle Pack Holistic....Wow!

Isn't Flint River the one that is baked when you order and shipped directly to you??? I can't remember which one that was, but that name is ringing a bell.

I can't find Canidae or Innova around here.....I wonder if I can talk a local feed store into carrying it or atleast getting some samples......
speaking of which....some of you mentioned getting samples of these foods, do you just call the company and request a sample pack?? Or go online?

I did see Chicken Soup in a local Atwoods store, but they were huge bags and I had no idea what to look for.....plus, I remember it was on a recall list awhile back for some reason.

Okay, okay....I know that ALL foods can be recalled at some time for something or other (spinach not long ago, peanut butter, etc)....I didn't "stop" eating them....I just hunted for brands that were organic, etc. until I found ones that were not affected and that I "hope" were safe to eat. (hee,hee....we all get alittle nervous after a food recall)

I am doing the same w/ Mojo's food.....Like Joy said, she would have to grow a large organic garden and have her own fish hatchery, etc...to know for sure what her babies were eating....that is just not fesible (in my house anyone - boy, I would love to have the time and money to do that for not just Mojo but for ourselves too).....so the next best thing, is finding a trust worthy dog food company.....whew....what a daunting task!

I know that most are like me......our Yorkies are better taken care of then ourselves....I know I try to feed Mojo the best foods, he (I thought) was eating better then me, has the best toys, snacks, grooming stuff, etc....so, we are not over-reacting, we are just trying to "better" what we thought was already "better". (hee, hee)
I go some Eagle Pack Holistic for my cat when it was on clearance and her stools are so tiny now! I also haven't noticed any smell.

I'm using three different kinds right now.

I use Nutri Source Puppy for Brea cause the bites are so small and it's a good food.

I am using Nature's Varitey mixed with Merricks, kibbles in the morning and raw at night for Tinka -Kaya was on the same till her bout with sickness and I switched her to Solid Gold Hund-N-Flock to see if it was allergies to the other foods. When this bag is gone I probably won't buy it again cause her stools are HUGE with this food.

Would they get all the nutrients if we just did boiled chicken, rice, carrots, cheese, etc???

((((AURGH)))))

Also, at one time, someone sent me information on food that you can order - you had to order from a consultant - that was fresh baked.....I can't remember the name of it....but it was shipped to your door within a few days of ordering because it was made fresh. Does anyone know this company and is it worth it??

Please sure!!!
I got this from a person that heads up the Yorkie Play Group here in Sarasota Florida.

Slightly overcook rice or couscous the old fashion way in water in a pan on the stove. (No micro-waving)
While cooking, add shredded carrots and minced fish or meat. (chicken, beef, turkey)
When done, ad 1/2 teaspoon of Olive oil, let cool and ad a food supplement with minerals and vitamins (from either your vet or the pet store)
You can precook and freeze portions. Take them out of the freezer the night before and let thaw in the refrigerator.
For dogs and cats who only eat dry food if added wet food to it, ad Gerber's baby food to it.
For those of you who are too lazy to cook for your pets, give them fat free table scratches AFTER washing it off from salt and sauces.
Hope this nightmare will be over soon.
Good luck to all,

Loki loves the Grammy's Pot Pie but it makes him gassy. We do better with Wingaling (their favorite!!) and some of the others. It's trial and error. All of them are good FOR them and tasty, but you have to find one that works. Also, we only feed Merrick canned in the evening. For breakfast they get kibble (was Canidae, now Evo). This seems to help them from getting too gassy.

Thanks for the info Erin. I think i will just stick to what their systems are used to right now. I am getting Princess spayed on Thursday so i don't want to change anything right now and give her gas or diarreah. She prefers the canned dog food to the kibbles since she has both sets of teeth. That will be fixed Thursday also so she can eat the kibbles easier after that. We have just had her for 2 weeks so we are still getting used to each other and she is still learning our routine. We certainly don't want gassy girls!

It depends on the type of Salmon and where it is from. The Salmon in the dog foods I give my girls is not poisonous because it is a certain kind of salmon. Faith is allergic to chicken so it works well for all of my girls. I really, really like Go! Natural. My older girls are puppies again and their coats are soft and silky (which is huge for a Dachshund). Not only that since I've started feeding them the Salmon diet they have not gotten sick in very, very long time. Thanks for the heads up though!

Wow! I didn't know that about Salmon.....there are a lot of dog products out there that contain Salmon, Salmon oil, etc......(like PetzLife for one)....I will have to do some checking on this and ask our vet.....yikes.....another thing to worry about!! ((eek))

To answer PUPPYLUV, yes, I am most familiar with the different brands of dog food. Pick your favorite brand, call the company that makes it and ask to have a tour to see how it's made. They WILL NOT let anyone see their plant with all the dead animal carcasses stacked high, the stench being unbearable and people all wearing gas masks. Sound yummy?

There's a food called...The Honest Kitchen www.thehonestkitchen.com
All ingredients are human grade FDA approved, made in a human food facility, not a pet food plant. You all might want to check that out. It seems pretty good...I'm thinking of looking into it. It looks like this one probably wouldn't have dead animal carcasses and nastiness like that.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I went to Care A Lot Petstore today. They have one about 10 minutes from me. I got a big 40 pound dog. Now all 3 of my dogs can eat the same food. I am sooo excited! They had the 40 pound bag on sale for $25 too! Which is great because that is the size I buy for my 97 pound doggy! I will let you know how they like it. The care a lot rep swore by it!
