Possible breeding problems? My mom was considering breeding her 3lb yorkie. We were recently told that she would very likely have problems delivering and need a c-section. Can someone tell us more about this before we proceed any further? Our goal was a couple more beautiful babies not health complications for the one she has. Thank you!!!!!!!!!

I don't think you're supposed to breed a female that small because there can be many health problems and complications with the delivery...You could even lose her. Also, if the stud is larger than the female, that can cause complications as well. I don't know the details on this, but there are other people on this forum who could probably elaborate more on this topic. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I Agree with Yorkieluv. I'm not a breeder, yet. But I do know that it is not wise to Breeding a 3lb Yorkie due to a Lot of complications that could arise. You could end up losing your dog and the puppies. It's a very risky thing to do at all if the female is that small. It would be best to at least breed a female that is at least 5-7 lbs in my opinion. Also if the male is bigger in size/weight than the female, a lot more complications could arise. I do hope that you reconsider breeding such a small tiny baby. AKC standard recognizes that Yorkies should be up to 7lbs. although i love tinies, they are very, very, very hard to take care of, especially when pregnant at that size. Best Wishes to you and yours

| My girl is going to be about 3lbs also. I would never consider breeding her and I hope your mom reconsiders. That is way too tiny to have pups. Its not worth losing a dog over. At best she would need a csection and at worst it would take her life. Not too mention the puppies couldn't be too healthy coming from that situation.

I've heard of people breeding with a 4.5 lb. female, but only with a very small male. Even that would seem risky to me. I would aim for a 5-6 lb. female to breed. Three pounds is too small IMO. I would have your female fixed and purchase another female if you are serious about breeding. I would make sure to find an experienced breeder that would be able to accurately guess (emphasis on "guess") the size of a female puppy in his or her litter. Just make sure that you don't get too large of a female- you could produce puppies that stray too far from the standards. Not that big yorkies make bad dogs, but for breeding purposes, you should try to stick to the breed standards. Good luck!

How is is then that "tinies" can breed "tinies". You can't just breed 2 5 or 6 pound dogs and come up with "tinies". Some people strictly raise and breed them. HOW??? We know it can be done.

Most people who want smaller yorkies will breed a 5lb. female to a smaller male like a 3lb, never a smaller female to a bigger male.

Several peoples are breeding bigger girls with very small boys and keep the smaller for peoples who wants to breed them and they don't tell the new owners that the mother is a big one . I would never have a 3 pounds bred for all the money of the world .
