Of the ones you listed I would choose Wellness or Innova. Purina, Eukanuba, and Royal Canin are not as good of quality.

Innova and Wellness are way better than the other three you mentioned. If you are having trouble with him eating, you might want to try some canned food. He is still pretty young and if he is tiny he could be at risk for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). I'd pick up a can of premium puppy food and see if he is interested in that. You can even mix it with his kibble to encourage him to eat it.

When I first got Daisy I gave her Wellness canned puppy food in the morning for about 2 weeks and she LOVED it.

PetCo is a good place to go for premium brands. They carry way more than PetSmart. Some high quality brands my PetCo carrier are Wellness, Halo, Solid Gold, Natural Balance and several others.

Hope you find something that works for your little guy!

Default best puppy food?

These threads are wonderful for information on dog food! I just have one question that I've searched the answer for and couldn't find it. (I'm new at this also so bare with me) I am feeding my YT Royal Canine for puppies as she was born July 27th, 2009. She doesn't seem to like it much. She keeps wanting to eat our lab's food which I don't allow (when I can catch her). Could I try a something different and maybe not dry food? Please help me on the best for her coat, health and well-being. Thanks!

Default Dog food

We got Angus when he was 12 weeks old from a rescue group. She was feeding him Blue Buffalo for puppies. I am continuing using it, although it is expensive. ( $23 for a 6 lb bag) We have had him less than 2 weeks, and would need to be careful and change the food gradually. Checking to see what other brands you all recommend.

Blue Buffalo is what we use, but it is very pricey. We live in CT. Good thing he isn't a Great Dane!

I go to dogfoodadvisor.com and dogfoodanalysis.com when checking out foods. I used to feed Orijen and Fromm but I have been trying to stay away from GMO's so I have been feeding Organix lately. I have been researching more and more and have been reading a lot about dry dog food not having enough water in it and that is not good so I am probably going to switch to a freeze dried RAW very soon or home cook.

The person who does dog food advisor is a human dentist not a vet nutritionist so please keep that in mind. They also don't tell you how the company's are and where they get the ingredients and such. They also rate foods low that have amazing quality control and that vet nutritionists recommend when they will rate food high that have terrible quality control.

I think all of the information on dogfood advisor website and others is very helpful for making an informed decision about dog food. You can also sign up on the site to receive recall information. Mike doesn't claim to be an allknowing expert on what is best for each dog. He goes through each ingredient and points out questionable ingredients and healthy ingredients. He admits to basing his rating system on protein levels but also explains his reasoning.

I am happy when a dog food is rated well AND it doesn't have any RED type in the ingredient list. I don't feed any of the 5 star, just don't want that much protein but we use 3-4 star with few or no red words.

His motivation is a loss of his dog from bad dog food. I appreciate what he does. Lots of good, helpful information on the comment boards too. It's a great site IMO.

The thing is it's his opinion that those are the best foods not like a vet nutristist who recommends some of the foods he rates low. Just by reading some stuff dosent make him magically know what's good or bad for dogs. There are things that dogs need and eat that we don't need or don't sound yummy. The company also needs to be taken into concideration, he has foods rated with 5 stars that come from company's with just terrible quality control and reputations.

Agree but like I said he is one of the places I find some good information. I don't base my decision on his ratings but I do like reading what he and his commenters have to say. For instance, he rates several foods 5 star that look great on paper, then you read the ingredients and in red it says "garlic". In his commentary he explains both sides of garlic controversy. Personally, we don't do garlic but most people may not even notice the ingredient. It's been helpful narrowing down the big food decision, but it's just one step.

This is kind of where I land regarding DFA too. I don't view him as the end-all-be-all at all, but I do think his site can be a tool in your toolbox when researching and learning about foods and specific ingredients. It can be a good resource for some basic info and learning...but it's always great to keep in mind his background.
