Good food to help Weight Gain? Hello, I just got a new litle girl today, she's seven months old. She is so skinny. You can feel her backbone and hip bones and ribs. She weighs 3.4 pounds, and is about the same size as my boy that weighs 4.5 or 5 pounds. The lady I got her from told me she weighed 4.3, but she doesn't. The lady said she was used to eating Science Diet Puppy food small bite. I got her a bag of it, even though I know it's not a good food so that I could adjust her over slowly. I'm going to put her on Nutro natural puppy food when the switch is done, but are there any treats or food I can give her that are high fat? She doesn't look bad because of all the hair, but she's so bony. She seems healthy, her coat is in great shape. She's got a vet appointment for Tuesday to get some baby teeth removed, so we are going to get her a good check up then. Whitney

Rosie was like that when I got her and wouldn't gain weight on just her dry food. I started adding cooked boneless skinless breast chopped up really fine and mix it in. She gobbles it and i have been cutting her back alittle she is getting porky. Not too much chicken though.about 2 tablespoons mixed in. I don't think you want anything high in fat.Can cause pancreatis.

I wouldn't reccommend feeding any high fat treats. It's not good for them, and may give your pup diarhea, which would be bad if she's already underweight. I am feeding my crested Eukanuba puppy growth formula for now, and then am also switching to Nutro. Any puppy food should help with growth though, I think. Just make sure that you are feeding enough. Every brand will tell you a different amount, because it will depend on how concentrated the nutrients are in their food. Missing Link is supposed to be a good supplement for dogs. I think it is more of a vitamin supplement, but if your pup is underweight, she could probalby use some extra vitamins. Your best best would be to ask your vet. She may have worms, or some other health problem that is keeping her from gaining weight. Good Luck.

Hi, All she's done is picked at her food, I even mixed some with canned and she only ate a little. I keep food out at all times for her. That may be why she is so thin, she just picks like a bird. I'm going to cook her some chicken today, and then probably get her some more canned food to mix with her food, and try to get her to eat breakfast and dinner, and then keep out kibble all day and night. I'll just have to keep my boys from getting fat, if she's getting special food they will want special food. Here are some pics of her, she's going from black to gold and the black hair looks stringy, but it's not. I'm thinking about going ahead and using the clippers and trimming all the black hair off, but she's so shy I hate to scare her like that right away. One of the pics she sat up and it cut her ears off, and the other was right after she finished her breakfast and was licking her lips. She's going on Tuesday for her vet visit to get a check up. I had her teeth scheduled to be done, she's got a few puppy teeth left, but I don't know if we should or not, I'm going to call Monday and ask. Either way she's going in for a visit. Whitney

It sounds like you have the same problem I do. My dog is SUPER picky! I mean, he has all the enery in the world, loves to get treats, loves to beg for people food, but he just picks at his own food. I've tried tons of different wet and dry foods, but I can't seem to find one that he will actually eat the recommended ammount of. I've been feeding him pedigree wet food for the past month and 1/2, but I know that wet is bad for their teeth, so i've been trying to integrate dry food back into his diet. But once again he just keeps picking at it. I just went to the store today and I hot a bunch of samples of more natura dry foods. He seems to really like the dry Innova. He ate about 1/4 cup in just one sitting. Which for him is REALLY good. I've been seeing in the forums that some people are mixing chicken with the dry food and some people add yogurt and cottage cheese to their diet, so I think I'm going to try that out this week, and If he keeps eating the Innova, I think I might officially change to that. But in answer to your question, I wouldn't worry that much about the picky eating thing. My dog is slightly skinny (4.5 lbs at 1.5 years.. but I can feel his ribs too). I went the the vet about a month ago and he just said that a lot of little breed dogs are just really picky eaters. He told me not to worry, that he will eat when he's hungry. Also, my dog still has 2 of his baby teeth (the fangs) and the vet said that they only had to be pulled out if they cause a problem. Well, I've written you a novel, so I hope this helps! lol. PS: If anyone has any tips on what to mix w/ dry food to get a dog interested, i'd really appreciate it!
