Default I can't stress this information enough!

Ever wonder why they get sick off of dog food, then like magic, they get well on *real* food? Why not just feed real food so they won't have the health problems. Find a REALLY BIG bowl or pot for mixing these. Cook up 1 cup of brown rice together with 1/2 cup of split peas and 1/2 cup of lentils till crisp tender then drain and rinse in a colander. Cook 3 pounds of free range ground veal or free range hamburger or a combo of half and half, and you can also add a 1/2 pound or little more of free range veal liver. Add to rice mixture. Then in a food processer, coarse grind 3 large fresh heads of broccoli with stems, 6 large fresh carrots and 3 cloves of garlic. Add to mixture. Mix really well and put in pint size (if you have only one small dog) ( or quart size if feeding two to four dogs) freezer zip-loc bags and freeze. I add 1/4 boiled egg for breakfast and steel cut oats, cooked, for breakfast and their vitamins, cod liver oil and a teaspoon of flax seeds. For lunch they have a little cottage cheese mixed with low fat plain yogurt and a few blueberries. For dinner they get the mixture with a teaspoon of wheat germ and some cheese.
For snacks I make peanut butter balls. I use one whole jar of NATURAL peanut butter (chunky) with 1 envelope of powdered milk, 1/2 cup crushed bran flakes, 1/4 cup flax seed, 1/2 cup coconut flakes, either fresh grated coconut or the kind in a can. (not in a bag) mix really well, make small balls and roll in more crushed bran flakes, place on a cookie sheet and freeze. After they are completely frozen, put them in zip-loc freezer bags. If you want chocolate peanut butter balls (I do a half and half) add 1/2 cup of carob powder. For half the batch use 1/4 cup of carob powder.

Buy Dr. Pitcairns complete guide to NATURAL HEALTH FOR DOGS & CATS. It has everything you need including recipes. Also find an holistic Vet. as most regular Vets. are not trained in neutrition and would rather sell you Science Diet or what ever else.
Another good book is by Ann N. Martin called Food Pets Die For. She has had the dog food industry in and out of court for over 7 years.
Please read these. I can't stress showing these to everyone enough.

Sounds great, but I really don't have the time to cook for my pups like that. I don't even have enough time to cook like myself for that . I just feed hollistic food and healthy snacks

So are the flaxseeds whole? I was told by my nutritionist that they MUST be ground for our bodies to make use of the nutrients. Otherwise, they just pass whole and undigested I'd imagine since our dogs are so tiny, and their digestion works a lot faster than ours, that it would be even more true for them.

Thoughts?

I've been told the same thing. You can buy them ground, I tried a small grinder for some I already had but it didn't work very well so I gave up and bought a bag of the already ground seeds.

Sounds great but with the good options availabe out there these days as far as pet food goes, i'll stick with that. I know you say only takes an hour but looking at the recipe something like that would take me several hours at best. Great info though and I'm sure some people will love these recipes.

Flax seed can be fed whole. I give my guys these whole. Another use for flax seed is to get something out of your eye. If you have a speck of something that is very irritating to the eye, then just put one flax seed in the bottom lid, roll your eyes around a little then with a kleenex or soft cloth, take the seed out. Whatever was in the eye will come out with the seed.
I feed my girls breakfast, a light lunch and then dinner. I use the mixture for breakfast and dinner. I use about a tablespoon of the steel cut oatmeal mixed with about 1/4 cup of the mixed food. Anywhere vitamins are sold, you will find cod liver oil. I add what's called healthy powder once a day. I give them about a tablespoon of cottage cheese with a tablespoon of non fat plain yogurt and maybe 4 blueberries. I use about 1 tablespoon of yellow cheese, like mild cheddar. Remember, my dogs are hefty weights at 7 & 8 pounds, so feed smaller amounts for the tiny guys.

I've been cooking for Sissy now for several months. She gets yogurt for breakfast every day with her Missing Link. I use Dannon Activia Vanilla. I was told you are supposed to use the full fat kind, making sure there is not aspartame or any other artificial sweetner in it. She gets about one ounce of it. For dinner, I make up a batch of chicken, brown rice, sweet potato, carrot, spinach, asparagus by steaming the veggies, using a rice cooker and boiling the chicken breasts (skinless, boneless). I buy Amish chicken breasts so I know there were no pesticides used. I use about a pound of chicken, 2 cups of brown rice, a whole sweet potato, about 10 baby carrots, 1/2 bag of fresh spinach and 1/4 lb of asparagus. Then, I dice the chicken and veggies into very small pieces and mix everything together. She gets about 1/4 cup of this for dinner. This mixture will last for about 3 weeks and takes about an hour total to cook, cut up and mix. I use ziplock freezer bowls to store in. Each bowl is about a week's worth of food.

Angel (14 weeks old) just came to us this past Saturday. She is getting the same as Sissy only in smaller amounts. They both are also eating Solid Gold Wee Bits, free feeding - mostly as a breakfast and lunch supplement. But together they have maybe 1/4 cup of kibble a day. I will also give little bits of cheddar cheese and fruit (banana, papaya, mango mostly) during the day.

I haven't changed up the mixture I feed as Sissy is kind-of picky with her meats. If I do mix it up, I would probably try venison or veal.

Sissy is 4 lbs, and Angel is 1 1/2 lb pup.

This thread is an absolute Godsend! My chihuahua pup BellaRose is the pickest eatter ever and it was suggested to me that I cook for her. I've made her boiled diced chicken and rice and a boiled egg, but beyond that I had no idea what I could cook and feed her, that would be healthy and safe. I'm most def. going to try what Yorkiedaze and Jodie suggested Thanks guys
