Flax seed can be fed whole. I give my guys these whole. Another use for flax seed is to get something out of your eye. If you have a speck of something that is very irritating to the eye, then just put one flax seed in the bottom lid, roll your eyes around a little then with a kleenex or soft cloth, take the seed out. Whatever was in the eye will come out with the seed.
I feed my girls breakfast, a light lunch and then dinner. I use the mixture for breakfast and dinner. I use about a tablespoon of the steel cut oatmeal mixed with about 1/4 cup of the mixed food. Anywhere vitamins are sold, you will find cod liver oil. I add what's called healthy powder once a day. I give them about a tablespoon of cottage cheese with a tablespoon of non fat plain yogurt and maybe 4 blueberries. I use about 1 tablespoon of yellow cheese, like mild cheddar. Remember, my dogs are hefty weights at 7 & 8 pounds, so feed smaller amounts for the tiny guys.
