Advice needed, please help! I wasn't sure where to post this but thought this might be the most appropriate forum. Jaden's been doing some strange breathing noises lately. It started a few days after I got him and its been on and off, it normally happens at least once a day. It sounds like he's either trying to clear his throat or clear his nose. Almost like a s very slight cough but it isn't a coughing noise. He seems perfectly fine after he's done and it normally doesn't last more than 5 seconds but I didn't know if this was normal. I talked to my Father who used to raise dogs (not yorkies) and he said that his dogs would try to clear their noses as the seasons changed and it wasn't anything to worry about. The thing is, the other day it seemed like Jaden had a very, very slight "runny" nose. It wasn't really running down his nose just a little tiny bit on the outside and the snot was very clear, not yellow or discolored or anything like that. I was just wondering if anyone else on here was having similar issues or had similar issues with their yorkies and if the cause of these things is in fact just the weather getting colder and not anything I need to see the vet about... Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Sounds like reverse sneezing. It's the most horrible noise-but my vet says it's harmless! Emma has seasonal allergies which have gotten better since it froze hard a few weeks ago. Could you be having a bad allergy season in your area? As far as the runny nose, it doesn't sound like anything to be concerned about since it was just this instance, but you might call your vet to be sure.

| Gracie does this all the time, some days more than others. My vet says it is a reverse sneeze, harmless and not to be concerned unless she starts coughing. It seems like it might be worse when she has been inside in the heated (dry) air than when she is outside in the rain. You might try running a humidifier if your air is very dry and see if that helps.

Reverse Sneezing My Toby does this also. The vet said the same thing, reverse sneezing, not a problem. Sometimes he gets excited and will do this also, sounds terrible and seems to involve his whole body, can't catch his breath. It is scary to watch but when it is over he is not harmed. He is healthy and very active so I guess the vet is right. You have to trust!

Here's a link that helps you distinguish between harmless reverse sneezing and collapsed trachea. It seems like a lot of Yorkies have been having slightly runny noses lately, probably the change of seasons. www.glassyorkies.homestead.com select hypoglycemia on the list at the left and then collapsed trachea.

Thanks so much! I feel a lot better now, it really freaked me out as it sounded like he couldn't breathe but then it was strange because he seemed fine afterwards. After reading through the replies and checking out the links I'm pretty sure it is just reverse sneezing *whew!* I guess I can stop having my panick attacks now everytime he does it. lol Thanks for everything!
