What food do you feed your yorkie?

WOW! i have never heard of most of these. i thought i'd come here andsee what is out there cause i'm about to run out of what the breeder gave me. now i don't normally go to the pet store... well didn't have a reason till now... i take it you can't get most of these at Walmart? Troy is eating Pedigree. is that ok?

I feed Bailey, Hills Prescription Diet i/d, and he loves it!

What do you think about wellness. I read the label and compared to all the others and I thought it sounded good, but now I am wondering if I made a mistake.

Pedigree is so bad for your puppy. Anything you get from Walmart or the grocery store is bad. I would highly encourage you to switch foods. You can buy most of the good foods online. Go here and pick a food off this list...you cannot go wrong with any of these foods:

Go to the individual food website and most of the websites will give you a list of retailers in your area. Most of these foods will be available at your local feed and seed store, too. Or you can always buy online.

Wellness is an AWESOME food! I would DEFINATELY stick with it. It got 5 out of 6 stars on the Dog Food Reviews Website. Yorkies cannot tolerate foods on the 6 star list because all those foods are too high in protein for our little guys. So your best bet is a food off the 5 star list, and Wellness IS on the 5 star list.

I would donate it to the human society. I too did not do my research when I first got Lexus 3 months ago, I had her on science diet thinking it was a good premium dog food, only to read up on it a little more and find out it is as crappy as puppy chow! Thank god for everyone in this forum, my little princess is on Chicken Soup now and loving it!

See if the store will take it back. Many stores will let you return opened dog food. I would HIGHLY encourage you to change. I know it sux, but it is best for your little one. I, too, did the same thing. You're in good company.

Donate it to the humane shelter and get that baby some healthy food! Feeding Pedigree is like feeding a child McDonalds Happy Meals everyday.

My little guy's on Eukanuba only because that's what he was already being fed at the breeder's. I don't want to switch him right away for fear of upsetting his tummy, but I will begin mixing in some higher quality food in a few weeks. I've written down everyone's suggestions...now it's off to the pet food store to see what's in stock in my area! I'd love to get him on Chicken Soup but I've never seen it in stores here. I do recall seeing Merricks and Canidae though.

This thread has been a real eye opener - my bichon spent his entire life on Iams and I thought it was good for him. Guess I was wrong. Makes me wonder if he would have lived longer on a higher quality diet.

- You want to see ______ Meal as one of the first 2 ingredients. Not plain old Meat Meal which can be anything including road kill, but Chicken Meal or Lamb Meal or Turkey Meal. If you see Chicken or Lamb or Pork or Beef without the Meal after it, they're cheating you. Whole meat without the Meal is mostly water. So you want that _______ Meal first. This means the food was actually fed to dogs to determine it meets the nutritional needs for adult dogs or for all life stages of the dog.

Chicken Soup meets all of these criteria. It is an excellent food.

OK, I shouldnt, but I am going out on a VERY TIGHT rope! I think if you put the name of ANY dogfood here, someone would find something bad to say about it.... I know they need good food and good products but I dont think sending a new puppy owner into a panic over some dog food filler is a good idea... When I first came here, I surely went into a panic about it and have since learned... if it works for YOUR dog and they are healthy, it is YOUR choice to feed them...
I have asked many vets and even know a couple of breeders who say that all of the "fancy" dog food stuff is marketing, to get you to buy their food regardless of what it is. The people who make that dog food list ARE dog food people. My vet does not recommend ANY dog food for that reason...

How can you tell from just looking at your dog whether they are healthy or not?

And let's test your theory. I feed Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers' Soul and Canidae All Life Stages. Can you find anything wrong with those foods?

I disagree that it is all about marketing. Most of the foods I listed on the poll are marketed very little and some are not marketed AT ALL. I had never even HEARD of these foods before YorkieTalk. I thought that ProPlan was the absolute BEST food on the market until I started doing some research. The foods that do the MOST marketing that I have seen are Science Diet and Pro Plan, which a TON of vets recommend. There are so many better choices out there than these foods, which are the foods that do the most marketing. Thus, I completely disagree that it is all about marketing.
