| When to spay? I all, I am a new Yorkie owner and am wondering at what age in general it would be o.k to spay my baby. I would like to do it before her first heat, and I am unsure as to when that might be. Is 5 months to early? I have heard that if you do it to soon then your dog will never grow out of its puppy tendancies or mentality. Is this true? I am returning home at Christmas and would like to have our vet there do the procedure because I am familiar with her. Bella will be 5.5 months at that point. What do you think? |

| My vet said to do it before the first heat to reduce the risk of mammary gland cancer. She said usually that would be no later than 5 months, but because Gracie is so little, she is suggesting 6-7 months. I would talk to your vet. Much depends on the size of your baby. The bigger she is, the safer it will be to spay her. I'm planning on getting Gracie spayed at about 6 months. She is now 15 weeks and already 3 lbs., so I am confident that she will be of a good weight when the time comes.

| Thats great, sounds like we should be o.k. by Christmas to be spayed. What a relief. I was really dreading having that procedure done here in Japan. I feel much safer with a familiar vet in my own country! Thanks for the info! |
