| What dio tapeworms look like? ok i have started to notice what looked like rice in my baby lazers poop, so i took him off his usual diet(newmans organic brown rice and chicken)thinking that it just the rice that he eats. that is causing this I have been monitoring him since then and MOST of the rice stuff is not in his poop anymore. he doesnt have any symptoms to suggest anything is wrong with him, and my vet gave us a deworming pill in june(he is going on 7 months old). I mean, i dont even know what worms would look like (do they move? or do they just look like dried up rice?) anyone have any suggestions? Bring him back to the vet? he is on revolution but that is just for fleas and heartworms |

| Alot of dogs won't show symptoms of worms until they have had them for awhile or have so many of them. Your best way to go is to take in a stool sample for your vet to check to see if he has worms, alot of worm eggs can not be detected easily and he may still have worms. Your vet can determine whether he has worms and what type of worm he has if he has any. Here is a link that tells you about the types of worms that dogs can get and they have some pictures of each type of worm. Tape worm segments do look like grains of rice though. http://www.thepetcenter.com/exa/worms.html

| Tape Worms One thing I discovered with Kasey is that she seemed to have an itchy rear end. She kept reaching back to her tail, like she thought there was a bug there -- but there wasn't. It was driving her crazy. The vet said, "If it looks like pieces of rice in her stool and she's itchy, let's treat her right away for tapeworm." Quick treatment -- one pill, I think -- and it worked. I had thought she was already treated with a preventative for tapeworm, but apparently the stuff I give her (Interceptor) ever month treats other kinds of worms (eg heartworm) but not tapeworm. This was a learning for me. Good luck! Kim

| Howie had tapeworm when he was about 3 months. It just looked like squirmy rice in his poop. It's just one shot and they're all better.

| that's not rice! Sissy had tapeworms and we found what looked like grains of rice in the bed. I took them in a ziplock bag to the vet. I told the receptionist, I think she has tapeworm. She looked at the bag and said I don't think that's tapeworm but said she would show it to the vet. I got half way home and they were calling on my cell phone for me to come back and get medication before they closed. One pill and they were gone. They dont always show up in the stool and the tapeworm sheds segments (the rice) periodically |

| Does the medication for tapeworms cause any side effects? I have to pick up medication for one of my little ones today and wondered if it was going to make him sick. |

One person I know made a big mistake with the medication . Stupid him he gave his little one twice of the medication prescribed , he was thinking that the worms would go out faster this way . The result was that the little one spent a few days at the vet clinic . | |

| Kasey didn't have any adverse reactions as far as I could tell. I seem to remember only having to give her one dosage, which the vet gave me....but I'm not absolutely sure about my memory on that part.... Good luck!

| You rarely see the actual tapeworm. What you see are segments of the tapeworm, that look like dried grains of rice and are usually stuck to the hairs around the anus. They are full of eggs which are eaten by fleas, then ingested by dogs, then continue on to be a tapeworm. The squiggly round worms in feces are roundworms. I guess it could be the food and she isn't digesting an ingredient in it, but most likely it's just the stage of life cycle the tapeworm is in that they have lessened. If I was unsure, I would take a fresh stool sample to the vet. My vet doesn't make me have an appointment and I think it is about $8 to $12.00 for a fecal check. |

| Wow, my vet didn't even require a stool sample or an office visit. When I described the little rice things, he said I could just come in and pick up medicine. He was sure it was tapeworm. I gave him 1/2 a pill yesterday and will give him the other 1/2 in 4 wks. He said that the medicine will cause the tapeworm to dissolve (cool). My little guy didn't act any different so I don't think that it bothered him. I haven't seen anything unusual in his stools either. That was an easy fix!!! |
