| Food and Eye Stain Correlation? Okay, it was a proposed to me today that there may be a direct correlation between our dog's diet and eye stains, which makes sense. A lady who has I don't know how many yorkies and extensive experience with toy dogs says that she feeds a certain brand of food and none of her dogs have any eye stains. This is awesome, and I think I'm changing foods to see if it makes a difference. Please respond to this thread stating what you are feeding and if your dogs have eye stains. Let's see if there is a pattern. I'm feeding Innova and yes, my dogs have eye stains. She is feeding Diamond Lamb and Rice, and no stains. Please sound off, and let's see. The results may be interesting. Thank you in advance for your interest if you respond to this thread. |

| I've heard that it's the beet pulp in food that causes it..... But, I think there's more to it than just food. Here's a couple good articles on tear staining: http://www.bhejei.com/tearsta.htm http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/grooming/grooming4.htm |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | tear stains come from something in the tear itself. This also happens with dog saliva. have you noticed on a white dog who licks its feet that they are always brown or redish. that is because there is a type of dye in their saliva and tears which turns their fur this color. i forgot what exactly it is, but the vet i was working for told me this. you can always spot a dog that licks his feet constantly because they will be stained. |

| Think twice about Diamond Wasn't Diamond Brand recalled a while ago due to that toxic fungus that caused so many deaths???? I remember doing a little research, it's not sold all over the country, but was in NY, and I remember I found out it is made in the same plant that manufactures Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. Can anyone verify this??

| I don't think food has anything to do with it. I know several people who have their dogs on a very poor brand of dog food and none of the dogs have eye stains. On the otherhand, I know people who give their dogs the very best dog foods and some of their dogs have eye stains. I believe it is in genetics, some dogs will have eye stains, others won't have this problem. I remember I read something that verified this, I just can't remember where I saw it. Oh and I think Innova is way better than Diamond, I would not switch if I were you!!!

| Thanks for the information. I may try the Missing Link. I did find out that Zoe's daddy has tear stains, also, so if it is genetic, this would make sense. Diamond is the food that had the toxic mold problem, but none of it was sold here in Texas. It's not a bad food, but I do think the Innova is better. I'm sure there are probably lots of threads on here about tear stains if I do a search, but hadn't seen one asking about food, & that is why I started this one. Again, thank you all who responded & if others have information about a diet correlation, please keep resonding. M & Z |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Marilyn, I feed mine the Diamond Lamb and Rice. No tear stains here. If you're looking for a food that does not contain the beet pulp, then try the Chicken Soup for Dogs. It's a very good food and I know people that have malteses and they feed the CS and the tear stains went away.

| I read online the possible causes of tear stains, and food and water are two of them. Cinnamon eats Royal Canin Yorkie and also Royal Canin Special Mini, and she used to drink Brita filtered water. At that time, she never had any problems with tear stains. Then I switched her to bottled water (Costco Kirkland brand) for three weeks, and not only did she have tear stains, but the tear stains became hard like rocks. It was awful and really, really, REALLY hard to clean. Once I cleaned it up, it was back in a couple of days. I've never seen anything like it. Well, the water had lots of minerals in it, and so I looked it up online and read that water with lots of minerals can cause tear stains. I then switched to distilled water (Whole Food's brand), and no more tear stains or those hard rocklike things. |

| We homecook for Punkin and she gets tear stains. SHe gets no beet pulp at all. I'll have to try the change in water.

| We also feed ours Royal Canin and I buy the Great Value sodium free water for them. We have the horrible tear and food stains. How do you find out what minerals are in the water? I just looked at the label and there aren't any listed, but I'm sure there are some in it naturally.

| I've read in the past threads here that they tend to get tear stains when they are younger and may clear up by 1 year old. I feed my Coco (Yorkie mix) and Pebbles (Yorkie) Innova. Pebbles always had tear stains where as Coco never had a problem with that. However, Pebbles just turn 1 year old last week and now that I think about it her face has been dry, tear stain free for a few weeks. |
