tear stains come from something in the tear itself. This also happens with dog saliva. have you noticed on a white dog who licks its feet that they are always brown or redish. that is because there is a type of dye in their saliva and tears which turns their fur this color. i forgot what exactly it is, but the vet i was working for told me this. you can always spot a dog that licks his feet constantly because they will be stained.
