| need advice about teeth Ok, I have a bit of a problem. My Mephisto just turned 6 months old a few days ago. He weighs about 1.5lbs...very tiny. I was cleaning his teeth when I noticed a second row of front teeth on the top. I know some yorkies have to get their teeth pulled. Anyways, I wanted to know which ones were his baby teeth and which ones are his adult teeth. Pretty dumb question, I guess. But, I am a new owner. Also, his 2 front teeth are crooked and below that are 2 straight teeth. I am panicking. I really don't want to put him under to get fixed or to get his teeth pulled. I'm scared to death!! Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

| I would wait until he is about 8 to 10 mos. to see which are going to fall out on their own and then have him neutered at the same time. The teeth on the outside are the baby teeth. We all worry about anesthesia, but they are even spaying 8 week old puppies now. Just make sure you have the preop blood work done. It's worth every penny and will mostly likely show if they are going to encounter any problems. Make sure your vet is experienced with toy breeds. Make sure they use isoflurane and do not give a barbituate preanesthesia injection. Hopefully, he'll gain to at least 2 pounds and the bloodwork doesn't show any liver problems. |

| Toki just got neutered and got 1 tooth pulled out. Sometimes baby tooth won't fall out and it makes their mouth stink and have croocked teeth. I would recommended having them pulled out by 8 months. Baby teeth are very tiny and sharp compared to adult teeth |

Hello there, I have been wondering the same questions myself and came across this thread. Poppy is almost 8 months old and weighs 2.2lbs. I noticed yesterday that she has a whole mouth of teeth and has this second row of front teeth as you mentioned. So do all puppies have that second row of teeth? I am going to the vet tonight just to get everything checked out. Teeth are funny things to figure out!

teeth removed and got there and when they rechecked her they said, nope she is fine they all fell out on their own, was we ever happy. Hope yours will do the same, we have been encouraging her to play and fetch her chew toys, altho, she wasn't wanting to chew them (think her gums hurt ) so I think maybe that helped them fall out. Your little one sounds adoreable so very tiney. Patti | |

| Hello everyone, As I mentioned I went to the vet last night with Poppy as I was concerned about her teeth. She is 7 months old and has two rows of front teeth...which freaked me out COMPLETELY when I saw them as I didn't know what was going on! Anyhow for those of you who are also new to the land of Yorkie World the vet said that this is all normal and that at 7 months we should wait until the Autumn to consider taking them out via a small operation as more than likely they will come out by themselves. In the meantime plenty of chewing toys should help matters along the way! I hope this is of some help. Greetings from Finland.

| Been there! Oscar just went in for his neuter on thursday and while he was under they were going to pull some baby teeth - He also had a second row of teeth where his adult teeth had grown in in front of his baby teeth. I thought it would be maybe 4 or 5 teeth that needed to be pulled, but they ended up pulling FOURTEEN! Poor Oscar! They kept several of the teeth to show me just what was going on in this little guy's mouth and let me tell you - some of these suckers had roots on them almost an inch long! They NEVER would have fallen out on their own! I was like you and absolutely terrified to have Oscar go through the surgery and be put under. He's only 2.9lbs at 7 mths and it just seemed like such a big ordeal for him to go through. I have a fantastic vet though - I asked tons of questions and they really put me at ease about everything. I paid out the nose for everything (final total was just under $1,000), but I don't care, I know I had some great people caring for my dog. I'll admit.. I teared up when I dropped him off that morning. But he came through everything really well. There is nothing wrong with waiting a little longer to get the surgery done and see if more baby teeth fall out by then - but I wouldn't wait TOO long to have them pulled and if you do take your pup in to be fixed, definitely get the teeth pulled while you're at it.
