Cost of Mite Treatment too High

[Abstract]

It's me again, everyone. I have another trouble with my dog Joey. He's got a fairly bad case of ear mites and we've been checking into various vets about treatment... the problem is, they're all way out of our price range. Individual charges for the appointment itself, a test, the medication, etc... it all reaches upward of $100. We've tried home treatments, and they work for a short time, but not as well.

Does anyone know of or know how to find any places that offer cheaper (or hopefully free!) treatments? Our little puppy is miserable.

I'm sorry I can't really help the only thing I can think of is maybe tell them that you can't afford that right now, maybe they will let you make smaller payments or maybe even reduce the price all together. It couldn't hurt to try, I'm pretty sure my vet would at least let someone make payments. Hope you figure something out, I know its rough on that pup and you to see him like that.

what kind of 'test' are they doing? all they really have to do is take a q-tip swap of the gunk in the ear and look at it under the microscope. if there are little buggies in it, then joey has mites. otherwise it just might be a regular infection.

Also, if you have any other dogs or cats you will want to treat their ears too because ear mites can be transmitted to other animals

These home treatments can take up to six weeks. It's not unusual for the puppy to develop an ear infection with untreated mites and that may be what is actually bothering him so you would need an antibiotic (prescribed or natural). I don't know if you have ever had an ear infection, but they are extremely painful.

I took Cali and Maya in today for microchipping and told the vet that she had been scratching her nose area and rubbed some hair off sothey did a skin scrape and looked at it under the microscope and charged me 27.00 for cytology, 14.00 for office call and 14.00 for medicine. They didn't charge an office visit for my Pom since she was only there for microchipping.

a few drops in each ear of baby oil or olive oil will drown the mite, repeat but if the mites have gotten on the skin you will need revolution to cure that, it's not cheap and you need a prescription.
