Ears Hope this is the right forum for this... Tinka is 5 months old and her ears are not standing up. Her breeder showed me how to tape them and I have been doing that. When the tape comes off, the ears may stay up for a day or two then back to floppy. The standard for Yorkies is to have erect ears and I really wanted her ears to be like that. Today when I re-taped them, it actually made one of the ears more floppy, so I took the tape off. Any ideas on how to make the ears stand up? I know sometimes at this age, they can still go from floppy to erect, but what is the percentage for that? I really, really want her ears UP! I know it doesn't affect their personality and all that, but when I see pictures of little ones with their ears the way they're supposed to be, it bothers me that Tinka's aren't like that. I don't know if I should call the breeder again. She has been helpful, but I'm wondering if she is getting sick of helping me. Is it their responsibility since they bred the dog? Can a vet do anything else to help? Thanks for any insights, omega

Hi Omega. Sometimes when the pups are teething the ears flop. You can try shaving the ears cause the hair weight make them flop also. I dont think your breeder will mind your calling to ask question about your baby.

when i first got buttercup at 10 weeks, one ear was floppy and the other one was standing up, but not fully. i tried the tape but it didn't work so i massaged his ears every night before we both went to bed and it only took a week and now at 13 weeks, both ears constantly stays up.

Is she over the standard weight (7 lbs)? If so, there is a good possibility that her ears won't stand. My vet says taping is a myth and never give extra calcium. He suggests shaving the top part of the ear to reduce the weight and massaging them. Sometimes they go down at teething so yours still could stand up.

| With my crew I have to say that taping did the trick! I was also told it wouldn't help...but it DID. There are two methods of taping. Just type in taping yorkies ears in your search bar...they are both easy to do. Sometimes the dogs just need a little "Help". Shave and clean the ears..tape for 3 days, clean ears. I leave the ears alone for a few days and retape them even if they are standing! After a few weeks leave them alone and see how long they stand. Retape if necessary. Please understand that if the ear is too large or thick they might never stand, but I made the decission to try...and it worked in my case. She may have been able to pull them up on her own but I didn't want to take the chance that she couldn't. It only took a few minutes every few days and I made the decission to stick it out. We worked with her from 12 wks to 5 1/2 mo before they stayed up...but they finally stood Good luck with your baby...but understand I firmly believe they are beautiful either way...just LOVE her!
