| Can Dogs Catch Diseases From Cats I'm considering getting a kitten/cat so Beau can have a friend. Can my male yorkie catch any diseases such as parvo, distemper, kennel cough (I don't even know if cats have these diseases) from a cat. If getting a cat would put my yorkies health in danger, then I wouldn't, I just don't know the answer. Would a kitten or older cat be better? |

| I don't know about diseases that dogs and cats can share however, I would think getting a kitten would be better. Unless of course the older cat was very tolerant of dogs. |

| Deffinately a kitten.I have a male cat (Rocky) who will be 5 this month and Iv had him ever since he was a baby..he LOVES Lady and Jess and would never dream of hurting them, infact, they play most of the day and its really cute But back when Lady was little,we adopted an older cat,a female whom we named Blackie. We had to get rid of her after a month or so because she would go out of her way to attack Lady, infact, once she pounced on her and made her neck bleed. You never know where an older cat is coming from or what its been through or if it will tolerate a small dog,but out of experience older cats cant be trusted around puppies.I would get a kitten and let it grow up with your baby. That would work best |

| My xhusband told me that distemper in cats is the same thing as parvo in dogs. I've been wondering if that is true. Maybe someone here knows. I have two yorkies that stay inside of course and also a cat which stays outdoors. I think as long as you keep a cat up to date on shots and flea and tick free it's not a problem, especially if you keep the cat inside as they like to roam or at least mine does. One of my yorkies got worms from my cat several months ago so now I'm paranoid about fleas. I've never seen a flea on my dogs

| That's what I'm thinking is a kitten (except they have sharp claws, wouldn't want Beau's face scratched). And I'm thinking from a Rescue Group as they are usually spayed/neutered and up to date on shots. AND, are all dogs interested in a cat's litter box. Is that going to be another problem I face if i get a cat? |

| There are nothing other than parasites that I am familiar with that car transfer between cats and dogs. (usual tranmission lines- humans, birds, pigs). A cat is fine as long as it doesn't care about a small dog- kittens are not bomb proof either, and both can harm a small dog. Proceed with caution, and only get a cat or a kitten that doesn't mind the yorkie. Make sure your felines have their immunizations, and you should have no problems, at least this is how we do it. =-) deborah |

| We have a cat along with 2 dogs and they all love each other! We got our cat, Annie when she was a kitten, so she's grown up around dogs. She was a little weary of Bailey when we got him (she's almost 2 years old now) but that lasted for maybe 2-3 days. About the litter box, that was the problem we had. When Dozer was a puppy he would get into her litter box & eat her poop It was the most disgusting thing, especially when he'd try to come give you kisses right afterwards. We installed a cat door and she goes outside to go potty, we don't have a litter box anymore. As far as I know, most dogs do like kitty turds.... |

| poops Yep, all dogs pretty much will eat cat poop. Yorkies are so small, that they cal go anywhere on the ground that a cat can go- so either no cat boxes or cat boxes in a high place. Parasites can be picked up through the ingestion of feces, as well as through grass eating. It so so neat that every one here is so educated! deborah |

| We have a senior cat that we had before we got yorkies. Chachi used to get in the litter box but we got after him and he stopped. I think you can teach them to stay out of the litter box.
