Deffinately a kitten.I have a male cat (Rocky) who will be 5 this month and Iv had him ever since he was a baby..he LOVES Lady and Jess and would never dream of hurting them,infact,they play most of the day and its really cute
But back when Lady was little,we adopted an older cat,a female whom we named Blackie.We had to get rid of her after a month or so because she would go out of her way to attack Lady,infact,once she pounced on her and made her neck bleed.You never know where an older cat is coming from or what its been through or if it will tolerate a small dog,but out of experience older cats cant be trusted around puppies.I would get a kitten and let it grow up with your baby.That would work best
