| Rabie Shot I have a question for anyone and everyone. Is Izzie too small for her rabie shot? She is 12 weeks old today (4/26) and weighs 1 lb 4 ozs. I was wanting to wait until she was at least 2 lbs or 6 months. I talked with the Vet today and he called the maker of the vaccine. They told him that it didn't matter what size they are because it's made for "species" not breed or size. All sizes get the same amount of vaccine. I'm just so afraid she's too little. My Vet said he wouldn't advise taking Izzie to the meet-up without her rabie shot, he would leave her at home. I wanted everyone to see her, but I'm not taking any risks with her. Please tell me what you all think. Is she too small and young like I think?

| Do you think 2 lbs is big enough? I'm even worried about 2 lbs being too small. Should I leave her home from the Indiana Yorkie Meet-up? I just don't want to take any chances with her health. She is so healthy now and I want her to stay that way.

| I think 2 lbs is still tiny but it sounds like your dog is going to be small anyway. I just worry about reactions from the rabies shot. I would not take her to the meet up. I think my dogs were 4 months old when they had their rabies.

| I also agree... The rabie shot I heard is a powerful shot. I know my kodie had a reaction to it.. and he was around 2lbs |

How old was Kodie and what kind of reaction did he have? I really don't see why it would be bad to take her to our Indiana meet up if she has all her shots except for the rabies. I won't be letting her down on the ground or too close to other dogs. When I told my husband we might have to leave Izzie at home, he was really disappointed. Even though we have 3 others and he didn't want me to keep her, he loves her and calls her his babygirl.

| too young She is too young. She is not going to get rabies at the meet up. The rabies virus is very delicate. The minute it leaves the mouth, it dies. So you have to be bit directly by a rabid animal to get it. Also, the vaccines is about only 50% effective (I read) so pets are still at risk even if they have the vaccine. Read on www.naturalrearing.com in the articles--the rabies article. suzie |

| I would talk to your vet about the meet up and go by his recommendation on whether to go or not.

| Strange, I was just talking to the breeder I got my girls from and she was telling me about this darling little girl she has that was sold. She said that she had to ship her, meaning she had to have the rabies vac and the little girl got ill. She was angry, telling me that the airlines make the babies have this shot and it is unnecessary at that age and now she won't let these people have this baby because she can't fully guarantee her. So everyone is sad and although the baby is better, she told me although it doesn't happen very often, it does happen. Now she had a pup that has been ill, she won't be able to sell her at the amount she wanted and the people have to start all over and wait for another baby. The airlines need to change this rule with pups. It's too bad ANY pup must be shipped but that is reality. I KNOW that I would personally go get it, whereever it was so it wouldn't have to be in the belly of a plane. |
