| Neutering Anxiety Hobbs is getting neutered on Friday. He is 5.5 months old and weighs 3 lbs. I know there is always a risk with anesthesia, so I am very concerned because he is so small. AND he has to spend the night at the vet. Does anyone have an extra small yorkie that has gone under anesthesia successfully?? I am also worried because doesn't stress cause wounds to not heal as fast?? I am worried that him spending the night at the vet will do more harm than good. Any words of encouragement?! |

| I'd like to know the same question. My little girl is almost 8 months and still only 3lbs. I bought her for breeding but she clearly didn't hit the weight the breeder said she'd be so I will be spaying her. I'm going to wait until she hits a year old to see if she will gain a little more weight so i don't have to worry as much about the anesthesia. She also has teeth that need to be pulled.

| Hobbs has 4 front teeth, so he definately has teeth that need to be pulled as well. I wish I could wait until he gained a little more weight, but you can't really wait with male dogs, or they will start hiking their leg all over things and humping. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali was just spayed last Monday while she was in heat. She was 8 1.2 months old and weighs 4lbs. She also had to have a Liver biopsy, and they were looking for an abdominal blockage. They also took biopsies of her stomach and something else. She made it through fine. I had it done by a board certified surgeon and at a 24 hour emergency clinic because she needed constant monitoting because of her other conditions. As long as the vet does the presurgical blood work and uses the isoflorin sp?) anesthetic they should be fine. I know I waited on cali beause of her health issues then she came into heat which was not fun for her and ended up having it done an an emergency basis but I am so glad it's over. Good luck to both of oyu and everything will be fine.

| Our little Magic was only 3 pounds when we had her spayed at 6 months, but she did not have to stay overnight....we used a clinic that allowed them to go home at that night. (instead of our regular vet that made them stay overnight unsupervised) I agree with those above...do all the extra lab work and make sure they use the isoflorin (sp?) gas. Magic had a harder time the first day or so than Sailor who was about 5 pounds at the time of her spay....but all in all things went good. Edited to add....Isoflorin (sp?) is a gas product that is easier on the pups than the normal injection type medication.....I have heard there are less reaction and problems after surgery.

| So, the vet should not use any intravenous drugs at all?? The vet should only use gas?? I thought that intravaneous anesthetics were better because the IV will allow the vet to administer drugs faster in the event of an accident. |
