| Citrus friut and yorkies Hello my husband and I are new here. Our Yorky Rudy gobbled up a dropped piece of tangelo. He really seemed to like it. Are oranges and tangelos safe for him? Thanks Susan |

| That's a good question. I know mine love raw veggies but never thought about fruit so to speak. |

| May- Comparing Apples to Oranges: Toxic or Not? Did You Know...the arrival of Spring and Summer brings lots of fresh oranges, grapefruits, peaches, cherries, apples and many other delectable fruits. However, certain parts of these fruits can be potentially irritating - or even occasionally toxic in some situations- to our companion animals. The peels, fruit and seeds of citrus plants such as lemons, oranges, limes and grapefruits contain varying amounts of citric acid, limonin and volatile oils that can cause gastrointestinal irritation such as vomiting or diarrhea if ingested. In some cases, exposures to high concentrations of these substances (such as those found in certain citrus-based cleaners) could possibly result in central nervous system depression as well. The stems, leaves and seeds of apples, cherries, peaches, apricots and certain other fruit trees contain cyanogenic glycosides that have the potential to cause vomiting and loss of appetite, and in severe cases weakness, incoordination, difficulty in breathing, hyperventilation, shock, coma and even death could occur. Typically, these severe effects develop from very large ingestions of plant material that are more likely to occur with grazing animals such as horses or other livestock. The consumption of a few segments of citrus fruit, an apple or two or a few cherries would usually not be expected to cause serious problems beyond perhaps minor stomach upset. However, it is important for animal owners to be aware of the potential for problems that these fruit trees can produce. Companion animal owners should try to become familiar with the different types of plants in and around their home, and make sure that the plant material of potentially poisonous species are not accessible to pets. If you suspect that your pet may have ingested a poisonous plant, contact your local veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (1-888-426-4435) for immediate assistance. | Vivi loves oranges but I only let her eat the actual fruit part and only a little at a time. She also loves cantalope, bananas, and watermelon.

| Every one of my 10 kids eat oranges. They wait til they get a small piece of fruit before they will leave me alone to finish my orange in peace. I have fed these small amts for many years with no ill effects..except for a few chomps on my fingers if I am too slow feeding them.. |

| Citrus fruit and yorkies Thanks everyone you have been so helpful! I thank you and my Yorkie Rudy thinaks you from the bottom of his cute little tummy. We are new to owning a Yorkie. I have owned and even bred many different kinds of dogs but Yorkies are so different. Rudy is like a spoiled child. He is 4 years old and we got him 2 weeks ago. His family had to give him up because he was jealous of the new baby. He is very jealous of our Persian cat but with patience he is coming around slowly. Thanks! Susan |

| I haven't tried to feed my pup many fruits - he does eat pieces of apple when I am feeding them to my bird. And - will eat some of the other fruits I feed my bird. I'm sure occasional small amounts of fruit won't hurt our pups. They have never bothered my dogs in any way. I think my dog didn't want a piece of orange I offered him once. I think it was a little "too sour" for him. And, he doesn't like bananas - I think it's the texture of bananas that he doesn't like. Carol Jean |

| I'm glad i searched for the word "tangelo". I'm always eating them in the afternoon and Bentley's always begging for a bite. So i was curious to know if they had ill effects... it seems that they are okay in tiny pieces and amounts. I wonder if it's the same for Kiwi.

| I have offered my Milo many fruits w/out success until last night. I was eating a bowl of mixed fruits and gave him some cantelope thinking he'd snub it. No--he loved it and after eating several small bits, got a sugar rush and tore the house up playing soccer for almost 12 minutes. My face hurt from laughing. |
