Oil on food to help with coat

It was recommended to me to try salmon oil on Riley's food to aid her coat growth. I know other owners use oils as well for shiny, healthy coats.

I went to Petco tonight and found Alaskan Salmon Oil, but the lady at the counter said to just use regular vegetable oil. She said she gives a bit to each of her 4 dogs every day with wonderful results. She seemed fairly knowledgable for a Petco employee, even discouraging us from wasting our money on some dog breath mints we were considering.

Is vegetable oil okay? Can someone further education me on this? I would sincerely appreciate the information.

i LOVE informed workers at a petstore! they are not nearly enough of them!!

i don't know about vegitable oil. i know olive oil is great... here is what we do.. i break open a fish oil capsule (That a human would take) and i put about half of it in wet food for layla.. this way it isn't sitting on her food all day and i know she has taken the full amount.. in this wet food she also gets her missing link and some fibre

We use regular vegetable oil, Wesson oil, rec. by our Vet. and have been using it since Dori was preg. last July. He said they break it down to supply them with some essential faty acids they need which in turn helps with their skin and coats. I put 1/2 tsp. on each of their food every other day. They haven't started growing vines out of their ears yet

What exactly is Missing Link and so it is something that can be used along with the oil?

It's a dietary supplement that comes in powder form. You just sprinkle about a teaspoon on their food each day.

I bought it when our rescue Jack arrived with a thin coat. I can't swear that it's the missing link that did it or not, but his coat came in thick.

One problem: It comes in a pretty good size bag that must be refrigerated and has a 90-day shelf life. At a teaspoon a day, it's hard to use it all in that time frame.

INGREDIENTS: Flaxseed, rice bran, primary dried yeast, blackstrap molasses, sunflower seed, freeze dried beef liver, dehydrated alfalfa, dried carrot, shark cartilage powder, freeze dried fish protein powder, barley grass leaf powder, dried kelp, freeze died oyster powder, zinc, ... (then a bunch of vitamins).

i agree it is very hard to use.... but we only have one dog.. so maybe if you have more than one.. i don't think i will buy it again.. might try and find another suppliment that comes in a smaller package!

My vet said to supplement with Omega 3's/fish oil. I take fish oil caps and just squirt a half of one on Gracie's food once a day.

I think it's a great idea! I usually mix a little bit of domestic olive oil every day in the food and feed my dogs with fish twice a week. But omega 3 is great not just for the coat but for the general health too...I'll buy it too

do most use the veggie oil/whatever kind of preferred oil on wet food? i wonder if my dog would like it on his dry food .... doesn't it get kind of messy??? you know the oil all in their little mustaches?

I dont think you get the same benefts when you use vegetable oil that you do when using salmon oil or missing liink which both have omega fatty acids in them. Vegetable oil does not

I have never heard about this. I would love to give it a try with Dior. Can u use it with all breeds and on dry kibbles. And aslo how much per day should i put on thier food?
