| Bone to clean teeth? I have 2 Yorkies that are only 2 and 3 years old. I'm a dental assistant and know the importance of removing the plaque and tartar. My 3 year old lets me scale his teeth, but the 2 year old won't. She had a crazy amount of build up on the molars. She's only 5 pounds, so many toys and bones and things are too big for her mouth. I've been buying those nylon bones because I'm afraid of them chewing on hard things then possibly breaking a tooth (which I see all day at work on people). But the nylon they pick at and it comes off in pieces and they eat it. That also concerns me. So my question is what kind of bone/or brand do I buy them to chew on to remove the tartar in the posterior of their mouth? I don't want to give them food/treats kind of bones, but just something to chew on. Thanks. |

| Have you considered letting a vet put her under and do a thorough cleaning?

| I have, but I talked to a patient the other day and she said it cost her over $1,000 for her 2 dogs to get cleanings. That's crazy. My friend said to give them bones to chew on to break the tartar off. I just was looking for advice on what kind of bones and I don't want to give them treats/ food. Maybe someone has had good luck with a certain kind/type. Plus they're so young. Don't they get cleanings when they're older? Last edited by Tinathetooth; 12-19-2016 at 06:55 PM. |

| Scaling their teeth doesn't get the tarter under the gum and when you don't polish after the scaling you leave them open to get bacteria and even more tarter where you scraped enamel. You need to just let the vet do it.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I would use CET Chews (get on Amazon), and RMBs (raw meaty bones)...I use RMBs from Whole Foods - their pet freezer section has rib bones and you (or the butcher) can cut them down to yorkie size. Beyond that, a trusted vet should be your guide as to when cleanings need to be done. No, they aren't cheap - but just like in humans, they must be done at times or you're risking other health issues (heart etc), not to mention excruciating dental pain if something gets infected.

| I use Leba III it is a spray and its amazing. If the teeth are already bad it will take more time to work and you will need to use two sprays a day. I have a one year old that has had it from day one and a four year old that I started later No Vet cleaning hear not yet any way and I hope never. Your right it's expensive to have the Vets do it but you may have to get back to square one and then start the Leba III. I can get it on Costco.ca for 99$ for two bottles it does last a long time. |

| I brush their teeth. The vet says they look good so far. They wouldn't let me do it at first but day after day it got easier and now they just sit still and let me do it. I also use the xsmall puppy size ribbed nylabones. Pieces come off here and there and I'm sure they've ate a small piece but I've never had an issue so far. Also, will your groomer brush their teeth? Mine does a thorough brushing for just $10 extra. If you try a few different things, and there's still plaque build up, I would consider doing the dental. I know it's scary to have them go under but teeth issues can cause serious pain. |

| I give Tessa a raw bone once a week and she loves it and works away at it for the entire day. She has excellent teeth at one year. I also brush them but I do believe the bone and the abrasion it provides against the teeth and gum area likely help a lot also. Once a week only though! |

| I also agree with daily brushing and giving raw meaty bones as a chew. Nyla bones are awful - I've read about some dogs needed surgery after ingesting the broken off bits. In addition to brushing, I also use this product called PetzLife Oral Care gel. It's pretty amazing and get rid of their tartar and bad breathe that even brushing couldn't get rid of.

| I would definitely look up the dangers of raw before decided on that.
