My yorkie is about to turn a year old and went through her first heat for the full month of march. Today I noticed 1 blood spot in her doggie panty. I called the vet tech and she said little dogs may have some spotting between heats and to monitor it for now for a uterine infection. Is this common with yorkies? I have a male yorkie unneutered that I have been keeping separate since she started her first heat. He lives with my mother. I wanted the 2 yorkies to play with her wearing the panty. It's up in the air if I will have her fixed for now. I don't believe fixing makes the pup have a longer life. My relative's small dog is going on 20 yrs. This is my first female dog.

A diaper is not going to keep a male from mating with her! It is 100% better for females to be fixed and science proves that. Every heat they have their risk for mammary tumors goes up as well as their risk for poymentra which will kill her even if you get the emergency surgery in the 24 hour time period she can still die. She also could get mated. In unneutered male dogs their prostate can become so inlarged they can not go to the bathroom, as well as testicular cancer and they will hurt themselves and go after a female in heat. Just because your relatives got lucky doesn’t mean anything. Please at least spay your female.

My first two females 3 years apart, I didn't have spayed, why, because they were so tiny, just wee lil babies, I was afraid to put them "under the knife" was they saying back then. At age 13 my oldest one had pyometra, her uterus erupted sending pus through out her system, she had a full hysterectomy, I had a horrible vet at this time which I realized when he handed me my dog to take her home, because he had no staff to keep my baby over night. Everyday I could see she was failing, every day I was taking her back to the vet, she wasn't eating, drinking water all he gave me was nutri-cal. Then she started walking into walls, his office was closed, I rushed her an hour away to a 24 hour clinic, I checked her in and was told to call in the morning. When I got home there was a message on my answering machine, my baby had passed away. For 7 days I watched my baby die before my eyes, I would never want anyone ever to go through this. 6 months later my second baby got pyometra she was 10 years old I knew the symptoms, I rushed her to the 24 hour clinic that was now the new vet I was using. She was caught faster but only lived for 6 months after her surgery. I beg everyone that gets a female to spay her before her first heat. Do not put your baby at risk for mammary gland tumors and pyometra.

Keeping an un-neutered male around an un-spayed female you are playing with fire, unless you are "looking" for an "accident" to happen.

PLEASE get that little girl spayed and neuter that boy, he is at risk for testicular cancer.

It must have auto corrected me or something and I didn't read back over it before posting.

You ask about your yorkie spotting and now you do not answer back. I think you better take the advice everyone is giving you on your female. Maybe you want to breed her in time but you do not have the knowledge; you need to spay your female and neuter your male. It just drives me nuts to read about dysfunctional people that think they know about a dog unspayed. Please spay her! She will live longer too and believe the yorkietalk people here. They all want to help you and give you good knowledge. I have learned a lot on this site and my yorkie was spayed before her first heat. Please listen to all of us. Best wishes to you especially for your female yorkie she needs it. Susan

Again I have to vent and say my last yorkie I had came from a breeder that was not knowledgeable. Keally had IBD genetic from her dysfunctional breeding. All that lady wanted was money and I got nothing but heartache and thousands of dollars in vet bills throughout her life. Please spay and neuter you will be a lot happier. Susan
